@WKCosmo I stated above that there are 2 and that mammals are sexually dimorphic, but for some reason you want to turn this into a silly semantic game instead of engaging with the interesting substance of these conversations, which I agree, is quite fascinating
@NutritionMadeS3 People really, really want to believe that their health is entirely under their control (or more importantly, that other peoples’ poor health is entirely their fault)
@WKCosmo Also: humans are sexually dimorphic mammals, yes. But they clearly have “gender” in a way that not all sexually dimorphic mammals do, i.e. an internal sense and experience of “being” a man or woman. How this experience is produced and manifests is not at all obvious or simple
@WKCosmo These are arguments about semantics and metaphysics, not biology. Mammals don’t lay eggs, but a platypus is a mammal. Does the exception disprove the rule? No, but it demonstrates that categories are fundamentally human constructs and their boundaries are not always clear
@elidourado We’re definitely not close to being able to make unicorns and it definitely would not be worth the cost to do it. Designer pets?? What is the market for this lol
@mbeisen Well there’s a third possibility, right? More often than not the correct conclusion is “people can be right about some things and wrong about others”
@jeb_bush_2028@slavov_n Definitely, I think we’re starting to get at it with new high res imaging and biophysical studies on e.g. liquid liquid phase separation of proteins, but so much of it still a mystery
@pizzaboy@JohnAndrewOwen Calculators have been able to do integration and partial differential equations for years. We still teach students to do them manually because they should know what’s going on under the hood
