The Pagan Roots of Mother-day

The modern celebration of Mother’s Day has its roots in ancient pagan cultures that worshipped the Queen of Heaven, a goddess associated with fertility.

In ancient Babylon, Mediterranean and Near Eastern cultures, the Queen of Heaven. Goddesses like Inanna, Anat, Isis, Diana and Cybele were worshipped with festivals and rituals as such. These rituals also included child sacrificing.

The Bible even references the worship of the Queen Mother of Heaven which is where Mother’s Day stems from, in Jeremiah 44:17-19, which says:

"We will surely perform every word of the vows we have made to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her, just as we and our fathers, our kings and our officials have done in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food and were well off and experienced no misfortune. But from the time we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been perishing by sword and famine."
