➡James K. Reap will be succeeding Michał Wosiński, whom ICOMOS warmly thanks for the considerable time and energy he devoted to this position for the last three years.

Professor Reap currently serves as VP of ICOMOS-USA and has held leadership roles in ICOMOS serving as President of ICLAFI and as an officer of the ICOMOS Scientific Council. He has more than 4 decades of experience in historic preservation and cultural heritage law and has published works addressing legal frameworks, conflict and sustainability in heritage conservation.

On 1 July 2026, @ICOMOS_France held a Climate Literacy Training for Heritage, at the École de Chaillot in Paris.

Based on the Climate Action Working Group (CAWG) training resources developed through the Preserving Legacies project, the programme featured three modules led by experts from leading heritage and research institutions.

Discussions covered a variety of topics, such as:
▫️ the scientific foundations of climate change
▫️ carbon emissions in the heritage sector
▫️ understanding climate risks to take action

Reaching its maximum capacity with 30 participants, this training reflects the ICOMOS network's commitment to strengthening climate literacy across the heritage profession.

Since its creation, ICOMOS has been developing a corpus of doctrinal texts at the international level as necessary for conservation policies. 25 such texts endorsed over 60 years by its General Assembly are currently listed on its website, on all topics of heritage conservation and in many language versions.

Several ICOMOS National Committees have undertaken the appropriation of those texts in their respective countries by translating them in collected doctrinal volumes. Thanks to their efforts, we are proud to announce that 83 translations, produced from 2002 to 2022, have now joined the list:
▫️ 15 in Georgian
▫️ 20 in Hungarian
▫️ 13 in Korean
▫️ 12 in Latvian
▫️ 9 in Slovak
▫️ 14 in Slovenian.

ICOMOS is committed to spreading its doctrinal texts in as many languages as possible.

Today marks the opening of the ICOMOS Climate Literacy Training for Heritage Professionals in Central Asia in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Over the next three days, 21 heritage professionals from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will come together to strengthen their capacity to address the growing impacts of climate change on cultural heritage.

Developed by the ICOMOS Climate Action Working Group (CAWG), this regional training combines scientific knowledge, practical methodologies, and collaborative learning tailored to the Central Asian context.

The programme will include discussions on:
▫️ the foundations of climate science and its implications for cultural heritage;
▫️ climate risk assessment tools and methodologies;
▫️ climate adaptation, resilience, and communication strategies for heritage;
▫️ practical exercises and case studies rooted in regional knowledge and local perspectives;
▫️ a dedicated train-the-trainer module, empowering participants to share and multiply their knowledge within their own institutions and networks.

ICOMOS is proud to have organized it in collaboration with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies, The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan and UCL’s CAAL project.

On 25 June, at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, ICOMOS, together with its partners @UNESCO and @ICCROM welcomed the official handover of a series of guidance documents to the Ukrainian authorities.

These guidelines and recommendations jointly developed under the leadership of UNESCO and with the support of the Government of Japan, provide practical tools for emergency preparedness, conservation planning and the long-term management of World Heritage properties, including at The Historic Centre of Odesa, Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine.

Protecting cultural heritage is an essential part of recovery. By strengthening preparedness, resilience and international cooperation, these resources contribute to ensuring that Ukraine's outstanding cultural heritage can be preserved for future generations, even in times of crisis.

61 Years of Heritage Conservation 🌐

One year after celebrating six decades of action, we look back on what makes ICOMOS a leading advocate for cultural heritage conservation.

Since 1965, ICOMOS has combined scientific expertise with international advocacy to promote the protection, conservation and sustainable management of cultural heritage. Through its global network of professionals, the organisation has helped shape international conservation standards, support World Heritage protection, and address key challenges such as climate change, mass tourism, or conflicts.

By bringing together experts, institutions, NGOs and intergovernmental organisations, ICOMOS champions inclusive heritage policies that respect cultural diversity and ensure heritage remains a priority on international agendas.

As we mark 61 years of collective action, we celebrate the people, ideas and partnerships that continue to strengthen the global voice of heritage conservation.

📢 CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:
The Role of Local Communities in Safeguarding Intangible Heritage within Heritage Ensembles and Monuments

ICOMOS Italy and the International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH) are organising a scientific symposium which highlights how communities safeguard and revitalise intangible cultural heritage associated with monuments and ensembles, ensuring resilience and sustainable futures.

Submitted contributions should address one of the following themes:
▫️The ICOMOS Charter on intangible cultural heritage of monuments (2024)
▫️Intangible heritage as a driver of identity, creativity, resilience and development
▫️Rescue and enhancement of intangible cultural heritage as a pathway to intercultural dialogue, face of global conflicts and threats

UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space | 10-18 June 2026, Vienna 🇦🇹

At #COPUOS69, ICOMOS showcased its leadership in heritage conservation in extreme environments with speakers Dr Elena Perez-Alvaro (Underwater) Dr Kati Lindström (Antarctic, image below) Dr Beth O'Leary and Dr Alice Gorman (Lunar).

ICOMOS Aerospace Heritage Secretary-General Dr Bryan Lintott discussed how the Antarctic Treaty System's heritage governance model could inform lunar heritage protection.

🟢 NEB Festival Satellite Event: Cultural heritage as a resource for energy-efficient and inclusive renovation & affordable housing policies

The event aimed to advance the New European Bauhaus’ vision of beautiful, sustainable and inclusive living environments, and to position cultural heritage as a strategic resource for Europe’s housing and climate transition.

In her keynote speech, ICOMOS Vice President Riin Alatalu shared key findings from the "ICOMOS Report on the Implementation of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive". She also highlighted ICOMOS's advocacy for mitigations over exemptions: rather than simply excluding heritage buildings from energy performance requirements, tailored, knowledge-based solutions must be developed, i.e. solutions that :
▫️respect historic materials;
▫️avoid unnecessary interventions; and
▫️recognise that well-maintained historic buildings can perform significantly better energetically.

➡️ Historic buildings are not barriers to decarbonisation: they are part of the solution.

🆘 Urgent Alert: Strikes at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tyre

ICOMOS strongly condemns the reported airstrikes of 7 June affecting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ancient City of Tyre, which was recently granted Enhanced Protection under the Second Protocol of the 1954 Hague Convention.

ICOMOS Germany, on behalf of the Working Group Shared Built Heritage, is organising an online lecture on built structures from the period of German colonialism in Africa, Asia and Oceania.

From individual architectures and urban ensembles to cultural landscapes and infrastructural systems, they have gradually turned into highly ambivalent heritage sites in today's independent nation states.

This event aims to tackle the ongoing challenges in this process, from scientific discussion and public outreach, building research and architectural practice.
