In the ID in 3D program, we use virtual reality technology to create educational tools about infectious diseases. Our aim is to improve science literacy about infectious diseases in both the classroom and the general public!

The ID in 3D team presents its annual symposium, which focuses on highlighting works and projects that overlap digital art and science learning. This year’s symposium features keynote speaker Dr. Brennan Spiegel and guest speaker David Moody
Dr. Spiegel is researching the use of VR in advancing doctor’s skills. David Moody is developing learning tools in VR for UVa med students to bridge the gap between textbook and reality. We’re excited to present our progress in creating a VR experience exploring Mpox viral entry!

What is texture and rigging? Texturing is a process that adds features to a 3D object to evoke a sense of touch, making it look more realistic. Rigging means building a skeleton that's used in movement. Spoiler alert: we’ll be rigging actin protein to make it bend and retract!
Did you know? According to the American College of Physicians, the biggest risk factor for infection is close physical contact with an infected person, through skin-to-skin transmission.
As November comes to a close, we're continuing to build our asset list in VR. Take a look below for a peek at an epithelial cell, the body’s first line of defense against infectious diseases. Stay tuned as we continue to build in Gravity Sketch and move into texture and rigging!
