About that “Sharia council ordered a revenge rape in Pakistan” viral post: it’s false framing.

What happened in those cases was an illegal village council (jirga/panchayat) decision, not Sharīʿah. Pakistani police arrested the council members and registered FIRs. See Dawn and Geo on the Multan 2017 case; Express Tribune on the Pir Mahal 2018 case.

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has explicitly declared jirgas/panchayats unlawful and contrary to the Constitution. They are not courts and have no authority to order punishments. (PLD 2019 SC 218; local legal analyses summarize the ruling.)

Islamic law is the opposite of this barbarity: rape is a grave crime, and collective punishment is forbidden, “No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another” (Qur’an 6:164). These vigilante “orders” are un-Islamic and criminal, which is why Pakistani authorities move against them; rights bodies keep documenting and condemning such illegal councils.

We should condemn violence against women everywhere, whether a back-country mob in Pakistan, a small-town “hillbilly” outrage in the US, or high-profile assaults in Canada, the UK, Thailand, or across Europe. Criminals are criminals; no faith licenses this. The difference here is simple: calling these jirga crimes “Sharīʿah” is a smear, Pakistani law and courts reject them, and so does Islam.

In Pakistan, this is a heinous crime under both the courts and Sharīʿah, reported as such and prosecuted as such. But by the time it reaches the Guardian, Daily Mail, or NDTV, it magically turns into “Sharia law.” Get your facts straight: criminals are criminals everywhere, not because of Sharīʿah.
