Nigeria’s borders are not closed - Interior Minister blasts Atiku
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s plan to “reopen” Nigeria’s land borders, saying the borders are not closed and therefore cannot be reopened. He cited the reopening of several crossings, including Seme, Illela, Maigatari, Mfum, Idiroko, Ikom, Kamba and Tsamiya.
Tunji-Ojo explained that some border closures, particularly along the Cameroon frontier, were security-driven and linked to the Boko Haram insurgency, rather than the 2019 trade policy. He said several of those crossings were subsequently reopened following improved security and joint efforts by the affected countries.
The Minister said tighter controls at some northern crossings remain necessary where insecurity persists, stressing that modern border management requires a balance of security, documentation, customs compliance and trade facilitation. He urged Atiku to present any new border policy without conflating separate trade, security and infrastructure issues.
