Gone on this day, 11 May 1996; Scott Fischer, American climber, died high on Mt Everest during the deadliest disaster in the mountain’s history at the time. He was 40 years old.

Born in the United States, Fischer built his reputation through bold ascents in the Himalaya and Karakoram. He climbed Lhotse in 1990, K2 in 1992, Everest in 1994, and Broad Peak in 1995, becoming known for his strength, energy, and larger-than-life personality. In 1996, he returned to Everest leading a commercial expedition under his company, Mountain Madness.

On 10 May 1996, Fischer successfully reached the summit of Everest for the second time. But during the descent, exhaustion, altitude, and worsening weather overtook him high above the South Col. He was last seen alive near the Balcony area, unable to continue descending as a violent storm engulfed the mountain. His body remained on Everest.

The tragedy became world famous through Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, which portrayed the events of the 1996 disaster from the perspective of a client on the mountain. Fischer was remembered in the book as a bold but physically exhausted leader pushing himself despite signs of illness and fatigue during the expedition.

Later, Anatoli Boukreev, Fischer’s lead guide on the expedition responded with his own account in The Climb. The book defended decisions made during the storm and offered a different perspective on Fischer, portraying him as an experienced climber facing the immense pressures of guiding clients on Everest during the rise of commercial expeditions.

Thirty years later, Scott Fischer is remembered not just for the 1996 Everest tragedy, but also for his brave spirit, big dreams, and deep love for the mountains.

STORY | IndiGo appoints William Walsh as new CEO

The country's largest airline IndiGo on Tuesday announced the appointment of former British Airways chief William Walsh as new CEO.

Walsh, an airline industry veteran, is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Announcing the appointment of Walsh as the CEO, subject to regulatory approvals, IndiGo, in a release, said his tenure at IATA comes to a close on July 31 and he is expected to join no later than August 3.

The announcement comes less than three weeks after the sudden exit of IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers.

Walsh, popularly known as Willie, was formerly CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group, a holding company, which owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling).

No high hopes from the budget this time

There is very little fiscal room in the budget for any tax tweaks or any major change in tax regime

some minor changes like higher home loan deductions, changes in HRA rules, and possible relief in the 30 percent tax slab is the ask but even that seems tough

just policy continuation on infra and manufacturing and fiscal consolidation likely to continue

Some expectations from middle and salaried class

- tax deduction limit on home loan interest under Section 24(b) could be increased from the current Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

- Change in HRA rules . Salaried employees are also expecting changes in House Rent Allowance rules.
Currently, people living in metro cities get tax exemption on HRA up to 50% of their basic salary, while those in non-metro cities get 40 percent.

- Focus on the 30% tax slab
The biggest demand from the middle class is related to the 30% tax slab.
Currently, anyone earning above Rs 24 lakh annually enters the 30% tax bracket.
There is a strong demand to raise this threshold to ₹40 lakh or even Rs 50 lakh, which would increase take-home income and boost spending.
