@arc_gov_au Having served seven years hard labour for the ARC, with many suggestions for improvement ignored. I am stunned by the recent rate of change in improvement! Now, we only need to double the resources available!
Congratulations MetSO Young Artist Ellie Malonzo from your adoring fans at the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, MetSO Perth.

@tanyamonro Interesting... 20% EOI success, followed by 50% full proposal success, suggests full funding for the overall 10% successful. If so, good move, despite the pain of the low success rate (might even lead to greater government investment).
@lisaharveysmith @WomenInSTEMAu I am devastated at how my comment has come across, especially to many of my esteemed colleagues who I know and respect.
I absolutely agree that women in STEM, and across society more broadly, face discrimination, bias and barriers. I am deeply sorry for the hurt I have caused.
@lisaharveysmith @WomenInSTEMAu It is true that talented women are under-represented in STEM, but they are over-represented in Law, Medicine, and the broader Health Sciences. This has nothing to do with "discrimination, bias & harassment" in STEM, but a choice, first expressed as subject selection at school.

@HPCAddict @JodieBradby Indeed it is, and this goes right back to schools. When I was a student (45 years ago!) we had equal numbers of boys and girls taking the top level maths and science. See figure for last 20 years. ATAR-maximisation games harm talented girls even more than boys.

@wabusinessnews If people wish to compare student performance across schools they can do so within individual subjects studied. The ATAR maximisation game does immense damage to our children who are encouraged to game the system, rather than challenge themselves.#education
It is even worse than that. Assuming you have resubmitted your own DECRA, if you now give harsh reviews to others you will increase your own probability of success! In the US, if you are an applicant, you are not a reviewer, but not in Oz.🙁
RT; The problem is that the ARC believes they work for the government of the day, and not answerable for providing a poor service to the research community. We have a fundamental governance problem, as can be seen from the ARC submission to the review of Ministerial veto.
I'm quoted in this sad-but-true article by @liammannix saying "Perhaps the problem is advocacy. “When the auto industry was under threat, they were loud,” says Bradby. “I despair a little bit with our advocacy.”

RT; I used the opportunity to suggest changing from destroying people's applications to providing additional resources to fund many more worthy proposals.
