The UK government’s decision to bar @cenkuygur from entering the country to speak at Oxford is a shameful attack on free speech.

@cenkuygur appeared at the @OxfordUnion during my presidency and debated @RabbiShmuley on Israel and Palestine. It was robust, civil, and exactly the kind of exchange universities should encourage, not fear. That debate is yet to be uploaded on YouTube because the Union is still waiting for @RabbiShmuley consent form .

Democracies do not strengthen themselves by silencing controversial or populist voices. Once governments start deciding which lawful opinions may be heard, we cross a dangerous line from liberal democracy toward authoritarianism.

The answer to speech is more speech, not bans.
