Ciprofloxacin or "cipro" as commonly called has been the first-line antibiotic of choice to treat diarrheal diseases like Cholera and Typhoid. In 2018, Zimbabwe has an outbreak of both diseases, and both were resistant to cheap, first line Ciprofloxacin. The government had to change the treatment guidelines to use of the more expensive drug Azithromicin to save lives. This obviously was more costly to the individuals and the government.

Zimbabwe and Africa at large is facing severe antibiotic resistance (when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them ).

This is accelerated by people who are misusing, overusing and not finishing their antibiotic course. Ciprofloxacin is a typical victim. Cholera and Typhoid resisting it, the danger is it makes the diseases harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat leading to unnecessary deaths.

To avoid this situation we must only use antibiotics as prescribed by our doctors, buying the antibiotics in reputable pharmacies, finishing the course and obviously us doctors prescribing antibiotics responsibly
