It's incorrect to compare MediAsas to the Netherlands because the Netherlands mandates social health insurance -- all residents are legally required to buy standard health insurance.

Insurers are obliged to accept all applicants and must charge all policyholders the same premium, regardless of age or state of health.

The reason why Netherlands insurers can do this is only because social health insurance is mandatory, i.e. huge risk pool of an entire population, based on the principle of social solidarity.

MediAsas is voluntary and underwritten by individual participating ITOs, with their own small risk pools of policyholders who choose to buy the product.

Hence why MediAsas is a typical private health insurance product: risk-rated (higher premiums for elderly/ unhealthy). This is openly stated by Bank Negara.

MediAsas will probably have all the usual things we see with conventional products in the market: refusal to accept high-risk people, no coverage of pre-existing conditions, two-year waiting periods before one can claim etc.

These can only be confirmed once the product is launched and people try to subscribe or make claims, but then get denied.
