Representative Theresa Mah @theresamah4rep was the first Asian American elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 2016. And now, we have 8 in the House! Huge shoutout to Rep Mah for being a trailblazer and Chair of the Asian American Caucus! #Springfield#Illinois
The story of this campaign cannot be told without telling the story of my incredible friend and campaign manager, Anusha Thotakura @Anusha625.
Many people don’t know that this campaign was run by a young, 24 year old Indian-American woman.
They made history when elected as the first South Asian and Asian Americans elected to the IL General Assembly, but they work tirelessly to make sure they will not be the last. I look forward to working with them to continue growing the IL Asian American Caucus @IllinoisAAC.
Illinois Asian American Caucus leader state Rep. Theresa Mah announces their numbers in the Illinois General Assembly have jumped from 4 to 9 — and their newest members all appear to have achieved a milestone first for their demographic. Background here: https://t.co/alsmt0fbYj
Nobody sent for @NabeelaforIL or @HoanDHuynh. But last night they both proved that progressive Asian candidates win in Illinois. Proud of the work @AAMProgressives did with our endorsed candidates. Excited to see them in Springfield. Let’s go!!
I started my morning knocking on doors supporting @NabeelaforIL, a trailblazer in her district ready to build upon the work we’ve done to lower health care costs and defend women’s rights.
Together, we'll continue the work to put Illinois on the side of working families.
Throwback Tuesday to the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Brunch in Springfield with this incredible group, trailblazer Representative Theresa Mah, IL-51 Dem nominee Nabeela Syed, and IL-91 Dem nominee Sharon Chung! We must flip these seats blue! #VoteBlue#Illinois#Chicago
Great night with the Asian American Caucus and candidates for the General Assembly! Inspired by Co-Chairs, Representative Theresa Mah, the first Asian American elected to IL General Assembly, and Senator Ram Villivalam, the first Asian American elected to IL Senate!#TeamHoan
“Starting this school year, every public elementary school and high school in Illinois must include a unit of instruction on Asian American history.”
The #TEAACHAct not only benefits #AAPI students, it benefits all students. Illinois is leading the way!

Thanks to the @IllinoisAAC for your advocacy and leadership, and @GovPritzker for signing the #TEAACHAct bill making Illinois the first state in the nation requiring AAPI history be taught in public schools.
We continue to build an Illinois that is safe and welcoming for all.
The AAPI community deserves solidarity from all of us, but you also deserve progress. IL is proudly the first state in the nation to require robust AAPI curriculum. Thanks to @GovMurphy for joining me in calling on leaders from coast to coast to follow suit.
This week, I joined @IllinoisAAC to honor the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta Spa shooting and the lives lost to this senseless event—six of whom were Asian American women.
They deserve more than our respects, they deserve to be here.
Today, the Illinois Governor’s Mansion shines purple to honor the victims of the hateful mass shootings in Atlanta one year ago. Illinois is the first state in the nation to require Asian American history – another step toward becoming the welcoming nation of our ideals.
