Brilliant ending to the first day of the Television By Design conference - May Davis talking about her design work on Landscapers. I forgot to take pictures of @Illuminations opening paper on early TV design but that was fascinating too. I have learned a lot today
@sinclairdootson Focus more on “how” than “why”. Many practitioners, though very far from all, are uncertain about what can be seen as abstractions. Respect - *really* respect - the ultimate value of craft; don’t always want it to lead to, or be thought of in terms of, art
Occasional reminder that I profoundly object to views of the owner of this site, and what he has facilitated it becoming, and so I'm now only posting regularly in the blue place as @illuminations.bsky.social
@alldestroyers@akw_8 @jamie_medhurst @hmwheatley@TeleHistories Apologies for not being part of this here, but nice to see you all. I’m so frustrated and angry at EM that I’m only reading in this place and posting where the sky is blue. Looking forward to the discussion.
Image fees - more good news: Tate will start removing Creative Commons licences from their non-copyright artworks online. This means that potentially thousands of images of some of the greatest British art will finally be clearly in the public domain, and free to re-use. 1/3
#OTD 10th Jan 1938 - Alice Delysia, French actress and singer who made her career in English musical theatre, appeared in 'Starlight', also on 2nd Feb, 13th June & 17th June 1938.
She appeared on a Baird 30-line transmission in Dec 1932.

@TheRSC I (and perhaps others) am about to set out from London for the #FairMaid matinee today; can you give us an update on whether the performance is going ahead, please?
🚨 Image fees and UK museums - a breakthrough moment. The system is collapsing. There is now no reason to pay fees for historic artworks (2D) in most cases.
The UK's art history tax is over. Scholars, the public *and museums* will be better off. A 🧵
🧚 🎶 🧛♀️ Sleeping Beauty and vampires, a real treat this Christmas Day. This gothic romance version by @SirMattBourne's @New_Adventures has sumptuous sets and costumes, and masterly storytelling.
Watch Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty on BBC Two and @BBCiPlayer.

A selection of just twelve articles, downloads, broadcasts and podcasts that in the past week I found surprising and engaging and challenging.
