@DavidPittelli1 @mattyglesias In some states, the legitimate temporary plate is actually issued by the dealership, but it’s a printed piece of paper and in other states you can print out a temporary plate on your own piece of paper at home once you register. So it really depends on the state.

There’s clearly a lot more than that because there’s numerous other civil rights attorneys who also do this work and they have seen the same thing. But this isn’t about criticizing the NYPD it’s a response to Matt’s comment about temporary plates

@city_enjoyer @mattyglesias The system is a mishmash because of all the different data that comes from the different states. Lots of times the plate is valid and it doesn’t come up in the NYPD system. I’ve seen this a few times.

@mattyglesias So “routinely stopping people with fake plates” only works if you are only going to stop people whose plates are ACTUALLY fake. Otherwise you are just ensnaring a bunch of people in the criminal justice (punishment) system when they haven’t done anything wrong at all
