๐ฌ Black Friday (2004)
Long before Bollywood felt safe naming Dawood Ibrahim, Anurag Kashyap made Black Friday.
Released years before gangster dramas became the norm, the film revisited the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts at a time when the wounds were still fresh, the trials were ongoing, and Dawood Ibrahim remained one of India's most wanted fugitives. Instead of turning criminals into larger-than-life icons, Kashyap focused on the investigation, the political failures, the chain of events that led to the attacks, and the devastating human cost.
The courage behind Black Friday becomes even more remarkable when you look at the timing. After his debut film, Paanch, was denied a release, most filmmakers would have chosen a safer path. Kashyap did the exact opposite. He followed it with an uncompromising film based on one of the most sensitive events in modern Indian history.
The result??
Black Friday itself was prevented from releasing in India for nearly three years because the 1993 bomb blast trial was still underway. It finally reached audiences only after the legal proceedings had progressed.
Today, films about gangsters and the underworld are common. In 2004, making Black Friday wasn't a trend, it was a life threatening risk. And that's exactly what makes Anurag Kashyap one of the boldest filmmakers Indian cinema has ever produced.
Not just a film. A phenomenon inspired generations ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
