I am writing this as a brother, but also as a citizen who is struggling to understand what kind of society we are creating.
My sister is 35 years old. She is a working professional at TCS and is now the mother of a small baby boy.
She got married in Delhi in 2021.
In 2025, while she was pregnant, she came to her father's home in Faridabad. She delivered her baby in Faridabad.
What happened next has left our entire family devastated.
No one from her husband's family came to the hospital when she delivered the child.
Soon afterwards, divorce papers were sent to her.
There was no proper conversation with her. No meaningful explanation to our family. Repeated attempts by us to speak to her husband and his family have not received a meaningful response.
Today, my sister is living at her father's home with her infant son.
She came back with almost nothing.
Her jewellery, clothes, documents and other personal belongings are still at her matrimonial home. She is currently not being allowed to enter that house to collect what belongs to her.
She had been working at TCS and is currently on sabbatical because she needs to take care of her baby and deal with everything that has happened.
She had also supported her husband financially when he needed help.
Today, she is left trying to understand how a marriage of several years could come to this point, while also trying to figure out how she will rebuild her life and raise her child.
Our family is standing firmly beside her.
But she is deeply distressed.
She cries every day. She is struggling with uncertainty, fear and the enormous responsibility of raising a small child while her own life has suddenly been turned upside down.
We do not leave her alone because we are genuinely worried about her wellbeing.
We are doing everything we can as a family to give her strength and help her rebuild her life.
But I keep asking myself:
Is this really the society we want?
Can a marriage end? Of course.
Can a husband and wife have differences and ultimately decide that they cannot live together? Yes.
But when there is a child involved, can the responsibilities simply disappear?
My sister did not bring this child into the world alone.
The child has a father.
And whatever has happened between two adults, that child deserves care, protection, dignity and financial support.
There is another matter that has caused our family enormous distress.
Her husband has told her that if he is given the child, he will send the child to an orphanage.
A statement like this, concerning an infant child, is deeply disturbing and deserves to be taken seriously by the appropriate authorities.
A newborn child should never become a threat or bargaining tool in a dispute between adults.
The child's welfare has to come first.
And my sister deserves the opportunity to recover her belongings, secure her future and rebuild her life with dignity.
I also understand that we are hearing only one side of a matrimonial dispute.
I am not asking anyone on social media to declare my sister right and her husband wrong.
I am asking the authorities to investigate the facts.
If there are allegations of cruelty, harassment, intimidation, threats, unlawful withholding of her belongings, financial neglect or any other offence, then those allegations should be properly investigated.
If the allegations are not established, let the law determine that.
But please do not let this matter disappear simply because the legal process takes time.
There is a mother with a newborn child living through this uncertainty right now.
There are several questions for which our family desperately needs answers:
What are the father's legal and financial responsibilities towards his child?
What legal protection is available to my sister and her infant?
How can she recover her jewellery, clothes, documents and other belongings that remain at her matrimonial home?
What should be done if the husband has made statements about abandoning or sending the child to an orphanage?
If there has been cruelty, harassment, intimidation or any other unlawful conduct, will the authorities investigate it?
How can my sister receive the support she is legally entitled to while she cares for her child?
We are not asking for revenge.
We are not asking anyone to destroy another person's life.
We are asking for the law to protect a woman and a child who are currently in an extremely vulnerable situation.
My sister has a career.
She has worked hard.
She has a family that loves her.
She has a child who needs her.
She should not be made to believe that her life is over because her marriage has broken down.
She deserves a chance to start again.
Her child deserves a secure future.
And if the law says that the child's father has responsibilities towards his child, those responsibilities should not become optional simply because the marriage has ended.
This is also why I am making this appeal publicly.
Because somewhere along the way, we have created a society where a woman can spend years building a family, become pregnant, give birth to a child, and then suddenly find herself fighting for her belongings, her financial security and even basic answers about what happened.
That cannot be acceptable.
I am also deeply uncomfortable with the idea that a woman's future can be completely dependent on whether her husband's family decides to speak to her.
Marriage may be between two adults.
But the consequences of a separation can affect an entire family, and most importantly, a child who had no role whatsoever in the conflict.
I request the concerned authorities to please look into this matter urgently and objectively.
I request:
@Annapurna4BJP — Hon'ble Union Minister for Women & Child Development
@savitrii4bjp — Minister of State, Women & Child Development
@MinistryWCD@NCWIndia — National Commission for Women
@DelhiPolice@CPDelhi@DCWDelhi — Delhi Commission for Women
@FBDPolice — Faridabad Police
@gupta_rekha — Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi
@nsitharaman — Hon'ble Union Finance Minister
Please do not treat this as merely a family dispute.
Please look at it as a question of the safety, dignity and legal rights of a woman and the welfare of an infant child.
We are prepared to cooperate with any lawful investigation and provide whatever evidence and documentation is required.
We only ask that someone listens.
Someone looks into the matter.
Someone ensures that the mother and child are protected.
And someone helps ensure that justice does not become so slow that a vulnerable person loses all hope before it arrives.
My sister deserves to live.
She deserves to recover.
She deserves to rebuild.
Her child deserves a father who fulfils his responsibilities according to law.
And our family deserves answers.
We are not asking for revenge.
We are asking for JUSTICE, ACCOUNTABILITY AND PROTECTION.

Deeply shocking to read this official US statement, which contains absolutely no expression of regret or condolence for the loss of innocent Indian lives. How can a “friend” and strategic partner be so deeply insensitive?
Why couldn’t a non-compliant commercial vessel have been stopped using other, non-lethal means? Is it not possible to disable a ship's propulsion or steering without firing missiles targeted to kill civilian crew members?
Practically every merchant ship navigating these crucial waters has Indian crew on board. Are they all considered fair game for US missiles now?
This approach is unacceptable and I hope @DrSJaishankar had said so to @marcorubio.
Four years ago, I sat down with my 12-year-old daughter in the US and told her I was walking away from a successful tech career and real estate business to return to India for public service and politics.
At that age, she didn’t realize “public life” would slowly take her Appa away from her for months… and years.
But I came with conviction.
So for the last 4 years, we gave everything we had — for example -In villages like Subramaniapuram and Vellanaikottai, we built bus shelters, restored a 100-acre pond, removed seemai karuvelam, strengthened bunds, planted thousands of palm saplings, supported students’ education, organized medical camps and career workshops, built community sheds, encouraged youth and sports activities, and contributed to annadanams.
It cost several ten lakhs of hard-earned money - just for this village alone. But more than money, it cost time… family moments… and precious years watching my daughter grow up from far away.
Then elections came.
And the same village chose a candidate who had barely visited them in five years.
In the end, one week of election-time money defeated four years of sincere service.
Yesterday, my daughter quietly asked me over video call:
“Appa… can you now tell me what exactly politics is?”
For the first time in my life, I did not have an answer for my chellaponnu.
@svembu
