A reason a lot of people aren’t self aware about their character is because we’ve been conditioned to believe that being a bad person requires bad intentions. Most people don’t move through the world trying to hurt others. They’re not waking up plotting damage. So when harm is caused, it’s easy for them to reject the idea that they’ve done something wrong. They don’t connect to the consequences of their behaviour because, in their mind, they weren’t being malicious. The damage they caused doesn’t register as their fault because they view themselves as having a good heart. That self image becomes the shield that stops any deeper reflection from happening.
