- Never miss your baby's scans
- Screen your eyes, kidneys and liver.

HEPATITIS B IS KILLING MORE NIGERIANS THAN HIV. AND MOST DON’T EVEN KNOW THEY HAVE IT. 🏥

Nigeria has one of the highest Hepatitis B burdens in the world. Over 20 million Nigerians are currently living with chronic Hepatitis B infection. That’s nearly 1 in 10 people. Meanwhile, everyone is running from HIV and Hepatitis B is quietly doing more damage.

HIV kills roughly 1.5 million people globally per year. Hepatitis B kills close to 2 million. It is deadlier. It is more contagious. And it spreads faster.
Hepatitis B is transmitted through blood, unprotected sex, sharing sharp objects like razors, clippers, needles and from mother to child during childbirth. You don’t need to be “reckless” to get it. The barber’s blade. The hospital that cuts corners. The mother who didn’t know she was positive. That’s how entire families carry it without knowing.
And that’s the most dangerous part…NO SYMPTOMS.

Most people with Hepatitis B have zero symptoms for years. Sometimes decades. By the time the body starts showing signs like fatigue, jaundice and abdominal pain . The liver may already be severely damaged. Cirrhosis. Liver cancer. Liver failure. You can be walking around looking healthy, infecting people and dying slowly all at the same time.

But here is where it differs from HIV. THERE IS A VACCINE.

A highly effective, widely available vaccine exists. Three doses and you are protected for life. If you were born before routine vaccination became standard in Nigeria, there’s a real chance you were never covered. There is also antiviral treatment for those already infected. It doesn’t cure it, but it suppresses the virus, protects the liver and reduces transmission dramatically.
So here is what you need to do:
GET TESTED. A simple blood test, the HBsAg test tells you your status. It costs very little. Some hospitals and health campaigns offer it free. You cannot treat what you don’t know you have.
If you test NEGATIVE, get vaccinated immediately. Don’t delay it.
If you test POSITIVE,
see a doctor. You will need liver function tests, viral load monitoring and possibly antiviral therapy. Do not manage this alone.
Tell your family. Hepatitis B is a family disease. If you test positive, your spouse, children and close contacts need to be tested and vaccinated too.

People will openly discuss malaria drugs on this app. But Hepatitis B? Silence. Stigma. Avoidance. That silence is why people are dying preventable deaths every single day in this country.
You owe it to yourself and the people around you to know your status.

Go get tested. Get vaccinated. See a medical practitioner.

There's a woman in Owerri, her husband was doing so well when he married her. They both agreed she would stay home to have their children and cater to them until they entered boarding houses. Unfortunately, 6 years into the marriage, with 2 sons, stroke struck the husband and he became somewhat bedridden.

She asked her younger sister to come stay with and assist her. She dusted her certificate and started hunting for a job, that she didn't want them to exhaust all her husband had saved before she started earning.

So this lady would take care of her husband while her sister helped her with the children. The sister had to pause her education and started learning sewing so she could always be available for her nephews.

This woman single handedly stood in a gap for her husband. She was always there, for hospital visits, for PTA meetings, sharing quality moments with her husband and sometimes they would cry together.

Because she wanted her boys to bond with their dad and be present in his life she did not send them to boarding houses as initially agreed. Whenever they returned from school, they spend time with their father and assist him in some things.

For 15 years she held on to God.

Today, her husband is healed. On the day of Thanksgiving service they had for him, he gave a speech and called his wife, the best decision he made in his life.

She cried out her heart that day. She said the worst form of torture is taking care of your husband with fear that he could die any minute. That her heart was always beating fast even when she prayed and fasted. But God said it wasn't his time.

Then the man said something that stayed with people..."You can never truly know who you want to get married to, we just take the step, follow our emotions and intuition and go ahead. The true test of a chosen partner's character is when calamity befalls you. My marriage has tested my wife and she passed. I feel bad that the test ran for over a decade."

There are women and there are women.

After our widows and orphans empowerment program yesterday, this poor widow ALILONU CHINASA HARRIETA pulled me aside. With tears in her eyes, she said she might not be alive to attend the next one. She sees no way out of her situation except if God comes for her.

She lifted her blouse and showed me the lump. She has cancer. She has spent the little she had on several tests, but some results she hasn’t even been able to collect because she lacks money to pay for them. The doctor says she needs urgent surgery and treatment, which will cost ₦2.8 million and above.

This woman is a widow with three young daughters. She lost her husband years ago. Her husband’s family has abandoned her because she has only girls. She was the only surviving child of her late parents, so she has no one else to turn to.

Breast cancer is a topic close to my heart.

Last year 2025, someone dear to me received a breast cancer diagnosis, but we found solace in the fact that it was detected early.

Who would have taught these regular "preachings" would help someone so dear?

The importance of regular breast examinations cannot be overstated, as they played a crucial role in catching the cancer at a manageable stage. Early detection truly makes a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Beat it early, it's a weak opponent when you hit it early.

Facts about this (Read slowly)

- Preventive medicine is the new flex in any branch of medicine. Primary prevention is the in-thing now.

- Routine breast examination. This can't be overemphasised especially for women. Now, If you haven't done breast examination this week. Pick 2 days of the week... Let's pick Mondays and Thursdays.

- Breast examination must be done at least once a month, say after your periods (for those who can't do regular examination)

Now, sit on your bed, in front of a mirror. Divide your breast into 4 quadrants and press it softly, then deep. Check if there are lumps and if there is pain. Press your nipples and see if there is any milk or fluid or blood discharge. Don't stop, go to your armpit, examine everywhere there and see if there is any lump.
Now lay on your back and repeat this same steps!...

Picking up any sinister changes early is the best way to kick breast cancer away!

- When you see any lump or breast colour changes or it looking like the back of an orange fruit or hard, please report to the hospital for proper examination and a breast Ultrasound
