This thing is not hard to grasp.
Alex Onyia’s South East Mathematics Olympiad is a privately organised regional competition for students in the South East. It was won by South East students across the primary, junior, and senior categories...
Primary: Egejurum Onyedikachi(Imo)
Junior: Onwubiko Chimdiebube(Enugu)
Senior: Don Anele Munachimso(Imo)
Samuel Olamide Famiroju of Spring of Life/Fountain of Wisdom in Enugu did not participate in, nor win, the South East Mathematics Olympiad.
Samuel won a completely different competition - the 23rd Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC). A nationwide tournament organised by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre in 2026.
In that national competition held in Abuja, Samuel Olamide Famiroju emerged 1st, with Onwubiko Chimdiebube from Evergreen Schools, Enugu, coming 2nd, and Mosebiuyeyi Adedeji from Phidel College, Lagos, placing 3rd.
The mix-up arose because Chimdiebube Onwubuiko who came 1st in the Junior category of the South East Mathematics Olympiad also participated in the ANMC and finished 2nd behind Samuel.
Alex Onyia did NOT substitute Samuel’s name with Ebube’s. Samuel simply did not participate in the South East Olympiad.
Lastly, Alex Onyia has never organised a national Olympiad. His initiative is called the Intervention for South East Education for a reason.
You do not expect Alex to leave the winners of his initiative and take the winners of a competition he did not organise to Rome, Italy.
Let’s be factual and be guided.
C’est fini.
If we're being honest, Alex Onyia has done quite enough for Nigerian kids.
This guy singlehandedly rescued the future of more than 379,000 kids who were victims of JAMB glitches.
These students received outrageously low scores from JAMB and Alex Onyia being an expert in the field, questioned the low scores some of these kids were getting because he knows their capacity.
He called out JAMB, pushed for remarking, presented his evidence.
Eventually, JAMB conceded. The registrar apologised on live tv and blamed the mistake on server updates.
The affected sat the exam again and aced it.
That's real impact there.
Unfortunately, the government of today will politicize the entire scheme such that only PAs, SAs, PA to PAs and SA to SAs will make the delegation list to travel out of Nigeria instead of qualified teachers. While some unworthy clowns will clap and defend their ineptitude.
When I suggested appointing Alex as Minister of Education, someone replied that he should first start in Anambra.
He has.
This exposure of the STEM and Math Olympiad is a blessing in disguise; something tells me that the next competition will attract more participants and more private sponsors.
I also hope the same pressure being applied to a private individual will also be exerted on the State and Federal governments to sponsor a delegation from Nigeria.
Nigerian students and teachers are the ones who gain the victories.
Are people aware that Alex Onyia once took up a case against a school in the South West?
Instead of supporting the effort, some people relentlessly attacked him here!
Calling him names, in fact there is a popular account here with the school name calling him tribal slurs.
It eventually got to the point where those opposing the case influenced the very people he was trying to help, leading them to publicly reject and withdraw from the case, forcing him to step back.
That didn’t stop him.
Alex Onyia has consistently called out corruption in universities across the South East. He even took on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), publicly challenging the institution over its poor infrastructure and conditions.
Beyond speaking out, he created a platform where students can report corrupt lecturers in universities across the region. That initiative has contributed to significant reforms in tertiary institutions in Abia, Anambra, and Enugu.
Whether people agree with him on every issue or not, it’s difficult to deny that he has consistently used his platform to challenge problems in the education sector and he’s right about situating his work in South East.
The idea that if you want to go international or public acceptance then you need to include beyond South East, is an expired narrative that no longer holds water.
Alex Onyia is in Rome, sponsoring kids in global STEM competition.
Ogbeni Dipo is on Twitter space discussing Alex Onyia.
"Rich minds discuss ideas: poor minds discuss people."
Some animalistic elders are trying to poison the minds of the young ones instead of calling for the total reform of our educational sector, or sponsor young lads to various championship.
Thank God Mr. Alex Onyia documented this for posterity sake.
'We deliberately stream our competitions live so everyone can see how winners are determined.
Our goal is simple: ensure that the right children win based on merit, not ethnicity, religion, connections or influence. We are building a generation that believes hard work is rewarded.
Merit is not negotiable. Watch the full Afia TV live broadcast and judge the process for yourself:

Nigeria's children deserve better than tribal propaganda. They deserve fairness.'

Setting the record straight:
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), Pan African Mathematical Olympiad (PAMO), European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), ISTEM in Rome 2026.
Misconception number 1: The International STEM Olympiad (ISTEM) that students went for in Rome is different from the IMO in China that Nigeria couldn't go to.
The IMO and PAMO are the most prestigious Mathematical Olympiads that Nigeria sends teams to. The selection process for this two is mostly the same as in the past Nigeria has fielded the same teams to IMO and PAMO. The National Mathematical Centre Kwali Abuja (NMC) is the government body in charge of registering a team for these Olympiads. Why do we need a government agency you might ask? This is because this competitions are the academic equivalent of Olympics and you have to participate as a country, not an individual. Countries have only 6 slots for the team. This is part of the reasons why it is more prestigious than these recent Olympias like ISTEM. Over the years, different private organisations have used the name Olympiads to denote their competitions. There questions are a far cry, in terms of difficulty, compared to the traditional Olympiads which require proofs. Also, unlike traditional Olympiads where contesting is on a national level, some of the new Olympiads are open to anyone to participate in as an individual provided you register on time and you have the money (which is usually significant).
Misconception number 2: This year, Samuel Famiroju was among the people that qualified for the IMO in China but could not go due to funding.
Samuel qualifying is false. The NMC organises a 3-4 stage Nigerian Mathematical Olympiad. This is totally different from what Alex Onyia organised with the South East Mathematics Olympiad or what Nigerian Tulip International College organises in collaboration with NMC (an Annual Mathematics Contest). The latter is the contest Samuel is believed to have won which is not involved in the selection process for the Nigerian IMO team. The selection process involves State Rounds and National Rounds. In the past, NMC has organised the contests and sent teams to various Olympiads (like PAMO this year in Ivory Coast) but funding issues threaten that now. While Samuel Famiroju did not qualify, here are some of those that did - Agbo Adoga, Ikenna Enwere and Damaris Oyerinde. The last two also went for the PAMO (as eluded to earlier, PAMO and IMO have virtually the same selection process in Nigeria)
Misconception number 3: Alex Onyia did not select Samuel Famiroju because he is Yoruba.
While I do not agree with the tag of best mathematician in the country Alex ascribes to his student, he held a transparent competition to select the students he went with to Rome. He has consistently said this. Those of us who followed the competition saw the winners emerge and Samuel Famiroju was not part. Alex has also never stated that his competition is only for Igbos, he said it is open to any student in the South East provided they are in the appropriate grades.
Misconception number 4: Ambassadors College sent a student to ISTEM in France earlier this year, 2026.
This is flat out incorrect. First of all, there was never any ISTEM in France earlier this year. The competition the student went for is EGMO. Special Maths Academy (SMA) (@SpecialMaths) has always publicised how the Special Maths Contest will be the main selection criteria for the EGMO. EGMO, just like the IMO and PAMO is not open to private individuals. To pull this off, we had to work with National Mathematical Centre, to get consent, as required. There will be another Special Maths Contest to select students for next EGMO in Croatia, so stay tuned.

Sometimes, I try to imagine the crazy dream Alex Onyia had. He saw the mass failure of those who wrote Jamb in his village. He could not take it. He didn't.
He said he was going to figure out the root of the problem and make sure his people would pass. Some of the village students had never operated computer in their lives. Yet they were to take exams with a computer. Alex got to work, he gave them sufficient computer education to enable them take the Computer Based Test (CBT), he paid for their exams, all of them, and they passed. Imagine the resources spent. Imagine the crazy faith of this man.
He dreamt even bigger. He decided to enlarge the scale of his outreach. The entire South East. This man must be crazy. Very crazy. And we are experiencing his boldness. Never let anyone shut you up. Dare to dream. Dare to work. Dare to put it to practice
Look at our children enjoying a peaceful boat ride with their peers from other countries here in Rome.
We will continue to make education fun, entertaining, and rewarding for our children.
In 10 years, I pray you will be alive to see what this generation of our children will become through our sustained effort.
They will be greater than we have ever been.
I don't care from what region you come, as long as you are a Nigerian and you are doing well, I will use my platform to celebrate you. Check my timeline.
@winexviv is doing well, I have been following him closely. The allegation that he dropped a Yoruba person from Enugu to pick his kinsmen is a fallacy and we don't need that distraction. I followed the Olympiad closely.
He has made it very clear that as long as you are schooling in the South East and you qualify, you will be celebrated regardless of your ethnicity.
Alex Onyia should inspire us all to do the same things in our regions across the country.
The international community in Rome will not announce Southeast, rather it will announce Nigeria. A win for one is a win for all. Let that sink.
The Ministry of Education has now contacted the National Mathematical Centre to request that it submit all national Olympiad competitions it organizes.
They want to start sponsoring all of them to the international finals now.
They have started contacting schools already.
This was abandoned in 2019.
I hope they don’t politicize it.
Our children need to shine on global stages.
We will not renovate government owned schools anymore nor offer to train their teachers. They have the resources to do that and they can fix them if they wish.
For ISEE we will build modular container schools across communities in the South East, hire and train our own teachers, use of own 21st century globally relevant blended curriculum to train the children.
We will also give out scholarships, sponsor sports competitions, support technical education, apprenticeship education, invest in science and innovations.
We must remain independent and laser focused with top level management of our investments.
We are getting ready for the announcement tomorrow.
This will be the beginning of a lot of greatness yet to come for our children.
Our children will be prosperous on a scale never seen before.
