Here we go. Results of Citizens Protein Project 2. Please read, share max. We have to bring in change. Thank you for your contributions. Huge thanks to @arifhussaintm who led clinical research division on behalf of Mission for Ethics and Science in Healthcare to do this...1/15
Went to the gym and lifted weights.
Came back and ate three whole eggs.
Had a cup of black coffee without sugar.
Made a protein shake with extra milk, chocolate whey and bananas.
Going to the gym did not kill me.
Having milk with fruit did not kill me.
Having whey protein did not kill my liver or kidney.
Full eggs did not damage my heart or derange my lipids.
Coffee did not give me anxiety or make me lose calcium.
Stop with the medical myths, and get back to the lifestyle you need and not what the so-called influencers and health coaches regurgitate on you all over social media.
The best treatment for fatty liver disease is to prevent it by improving your cardiometabolic health. Here is a small list of tasks that I advise my patients to undergo to assess their "fitness" before I prescribe exercise for treating fatty liver.

When I designed this public health awareness project and suggested that we ask the public on social media to support this good cause, people around me were sceptical about raising such high-value large funds just to analyse protein powders. It seemed like we would have to wait for someone like @paraschopra to help us out again. But the Community proved us wrong.
The Citizens Protein Project 2 raised its funding goal and so much more in less than 36 hours of going live and we disabled the funding page yesterday because we overshot the actual goal.
Please see the below visual abstract for final funding update.
Once again, we thank you, your friends and family, for participating in this and proving that citizen science has a major role to play in India's public healthcare.

Dear friends, good morning Sunday!
An announcement. Please read till the end.
The Citizens Protein Project - 2
A call for public participation and support
Many of you may have heard of The Citizen's Protein Project. It was citizen's science at its best. We conducted an independent, self-funded lab analysis of 36 popular protein powders available in India.
https://t.co/HH93RU6VrM
The first project funded wholly by Paras Chopra and me, conducted by our group, with the help of an authoritative, government approved standardized lab partner exposed widespread mislabelling and contamination in protein supplements—a major consumer safety concern. We highlighted regulatory gaps, especially in India regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's (FSSAI) oversight and lack of transparency in the dietary supplement industry.
The study became extremely viral.
https://t.co/frk3SV6Emv
It shook up the protein supplement industry. It was all over social, visual and print media.
https://t.co/RQ3uiOr4ko
It prompted the FSSAI to introduce stricter regulations targeting misleading claims by protein companies.
https://t.co/pFiTJ9VtaD
It showed the all of us the powerful influence public participation in evidence-based medicine looked like.
Now we are back. And we need your support.
In Citizens Protein Project 2, we are aiming for something bigger. We aiming for something better, something far more important.
The patient population is among the highest, in need of protein supplements. Adequate intake and supplementation of good quality protein increases their life expectancy - especially cancer, liver and kidney patients. Hospitals across India sell "Medical Pharmaceutical" grade protein for these patients.
But how good are they? Are they good quality? Are they worth their price? Contaminants? Adulterants? Truthful labelling?
Take an example. Hepapro Protein marketed by British Biologicals heavily prescribed by doctors for liver patients, against The Whole Truth Whey Isolate.
Hepapro delivers only about 12 g of protein in every 100 g of powder. The patient must consume roughly a quarter-kilo of it each day—and burn through 19 tins in a month—to get the same 30 g of protein you can obtain from a single 35 g scoop of The Whole Truth Raw Whey Isolate. That sheer volume makes Hepapro punishing on both wallet and waistline, costing roughly ₹11 k–15 k for the month at current retail prices (₹572–795 per 400 g tin).
By contrast, one 1-kg tub of The Whole Truth isolate plus a small top-up, supplies the full month’s protein for about ₹4.3 k, keeping the cost per gram of usable protein near ₹5 instead of Hepapro’s ~₹15
In short: the whey isolate is three times cheaper and far easier to consume. Hepapro and such are mostly formulated as a medical nutrition and so most of its calories come from carbs (maltodextrin/sucrose) and micronutrients—not protein. Additionally, the Whole Truth publishes full heavy-metal and adulterant reports batch-wise—rare transparency for Indian brands. Hepapro and such medical pharma marketed protein powders don’t list third-party contaminant tests at all.
In Citizens Protein Project 2, we aim to study and analyse the quality and labelling of protein powders marketed by the "Big Pharma" against nutrition and wellness industry grade protein. For your education, by providing transparent results. Something that the industry or the government will never disclose. And we will publish this in a peer reviewed journal showcasing all the public participation and funding details. The first of its kind study in the nutrition and wellness sphere anywhere in the world!
So we need your help. As my contribution, I have purchased 28 types of proteins (medical pharma as well as wellness industry made) spending ₹ 45,484.
You can see the list here: https://t.co/uaRCwnzsgA
Please contribute to this important project and share this with your friends and family for their contributions. We are looking at analysing 30 protein popularly sold as well as prescribed protein products, but will do more, if we have more funds available from this campaign.
We will start the analysis on purchased products as soon as 75% of the initial funding goal is reached. You can make a contribution to the project here:

Let citizens science take India to new heights and be the greatest line of defence against public health harm!
Thank you in advance for your support and thank you for reading till the end!
Dear friends, an update and a request.
A bit long, but stay with me.
Since I have been actively educating the public on harms of pseudoscientific practices such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy, I have [in]arguably become India’s most litigated medical doctor and science communicator and the target of multiple civil and criminal defamation suits and police cases from Ayurveda & Homeopathy practitioners, companies and alternative medicine industry.
The alternative medicine practitioners, manufacturers and industry as well as government regulators have never disproven my science-backed information that portray them as a public health danger through scientific deliberations. They have no evidence to show for the benefits they claim and have never provided scientific debates to prove me wrong.
Through objective evidence generation, me and my team have always shown how dangerous alternative medicine products and practices are on the public and patients. To this extent, we have spent tens of lakhs of rupees from our own pockets to analyse and publish large body of evidence on AYUSH practices and liver damage in reputed journals.
The only way the alternative medicine community knows how to respond, is to gag the science communicator through legal harassments and expensive litigations. They do this purposefully to drain me out of money. As a monthly salaried medical doctor, with debts, loans and EMIs, it is now difficult for me to handle these suits on my own - because the Ayurvedic community has been systematically targeting me with harassment litigations from all corners of the country, and most so, from my State, Kerala.
I have kind and good lawyers who have provided me counsel pro-bono on many occasions, but some lawsuits take long time to come to their conclusion. And the number of lawsuits are building up. This means multiple hearings and lot of work from the lawyers including documentation, travel and representation and it is only right, that I pay them for their services.
Until now, including the largest lawsuit that I am fighting out with Himalaya Company, I have spent around 16 lakh rupees (USD 18,700) over the last 4 years battling these legal suits and replying to legal notices from all over India.
I don't fight health misinformation for myself, but for the people and for my patients. As a doctor, I do not confine myself to outpatient work and enjoy my life inside a comfortable bubble like most other practitioners do, instead, I get outside, on the ground and fight for my patients, their families and you, the people. My passion is public health education and promotion of scientific temper in the society so that we can progress as a strong nation.
I understand that because of my work, alternative medicine industry has faced loss of business, but that was never my real focus. My focus was that person or that patient, who was not mislead into trying an unscientific practice and damaging their health or worsening their pre-existing disease. I win, we win, if we can save one life - If we can prevent one poor person's money loss because of what we do. In a country like India, poverty is just a hospital bill away and preventive medicine is the right way to go.
In this context, for the time being, I am asking you, the public if you would like to be part of my battle against health misinformation and promotion of scientific temperament? If so, I will be happy and obliged if you can donate to this cause that impacts all of us and our future.
For now, I have activated the "TIPS" facility on Twitter for your kind contributions and me and my team are looking to develop a platform where the public can contribute to legal battles - for science, and also towards public health projects under the banner of the society that I am part of - MESH (Mission for Ethics and Science in Healthcare). Even such platforms take time and money to develop. The TIPS feature is active at the top of my profile.
I hope we can do this together. Unfortunately, it is just me, doing the "needful dirty" work, for a price to pay and I wish there were more "Liver Docs" to ease my burden. Maybe in the future.
Below, are the current court cases that I am battling in various Courts due to defamation litigation from various Ayurveda industry, and their current status. I will update this post with more on existing cases outside Kerala and new cases as they come in. I hope I can count on your gracious monetary support.
Thank you for reading this and for your support.
Best,
The Liver Doc.
