Filed an #eb5 case last week. It weighed 45lbs! Sad part is @USCIS will spend forever scanning it in rather than having some kind of competent online filing system. Again, we prep these as PDFs and print them so they can turn them to PDfs. Not exactly environmentally friendly eh?

I graduated from INSEAD in 2015.

[1] One of my batchmates founded a Unicorn (in Europe)

[2] 100+ ended up garnering wealth in excess of a 3Mn$+ each in the last 10 years (through jobs)

[3] At least (20 folks) I know did not go through the job route. But, profitable startup route. And, generated in excess of 10Mn$ in the last 10 years.

I had the pleasure of knowing these people. I still talk to many of them on one-on-one basis.

3 things stood out for me about these wealth builders.

[1] They are EXTREMELY comfortable leaving their comfort zone.

- They are okay shifting countries/firms for professional growth.
- They are not scared of doing hard things. Or learning new things.

[2] They are EXTREMELY focused. They know what they want. And, they go for it.

- Many of my friends were startup guys, wanted to shift to consulting
- Worked hard. Got into Consulting
- Then quit to do a startup again

This might look confusing to the external world.
But, it is NOT.

This is called as "segmented" focus.
You focus on 1 thing, ace that. Move onto the next.

Excelling at something gives you confidence to do more amazing things subsequently.

[3] They have EXTREMELY good judgement.

- Whom to trust, what career move to make, how much risk to take etc
- Can't be taught. There is no course on this.
- But, this aspect of your life is going to impact you THE MOST.

Good judgement comes from making harder and harder decisions.

Sometimes you might be wrong.
You will learn from it.
This will improve your odds of eventually being right about things.

Point is: building self-made wealth is tough. It takes a combination of skills.

If you are young listening to this: be accountable for your own development.

You will get there if you are a hardworking. And, willing to learn and improve.

Twice this week, I have watched an elderly individual, fade into the busy life in which we all live. One man just needed Panadol for his wife but the shop assistant simply said it’s in ‘6’. But he struggled to navigate the supermarket and as I watched him go in the wrong direction, I left all my groceries and took him where he needed to go. Today, I watched an elderly man struggle in the heat, who had obviously had a fall with a huge scrape and blood on his leg. He walked past people in the cafe, while he slowly made his way to his car. Not one person stopped. Or looked. Or acknowledged him. I took him to his car and checked he was ok. He told me he had a fall and wasn’t sure how the air con worked in his car so he just didn’t use it. I sat with him until his aircon kicked in and heard him talk about the old frail body that he is in, that fails him now, every single day.

When you see an elderly person walking down the street, searching in the supermarket, or struggling to their car, take a minute out of your busy schedule and ask them if they need a hand. Think about your grandparents and your parents and how pissed you would be if someone didn’t stop to help them. But more, think of them as you.

Once upon a time, they were you. They were busy, they had work, they had children, they were able... Today, they are just in an older body that is not going as fast as it used to and this busy life is fucking confusing. They deserve our utmost respect and consideration. One day it will be you, it will be us. I wish more people gave a shit about them and acknowledged them for their admirable existence and geez I hope someday, not that far away, someone does it for me.

We live in a world, where making money is becoming much easier than saving money.

[1] People are able to build multiple income streams.
[2] Raise money faster.
[3] Build distribution and scale.

The success stories are inspiring, no doubt.

But, please understand that the timeline to success/failure is also shrinking.

It might feel great to be a YouTube sensation at 25.

But, sustaining that success even for 10 years is going to be extremely hard.

Our careers are a marathon, not a sprint.

Very few billionaires in the world, completely quit and retire on an island. Money for most becomes irrelevant after a point.

As humans, we always strive to find meaning through our work.

A better way of thinking about careers NOW is: to divide it into an 'exponential phase' and a 'stable phase'.

While entrepreneurship, risk taking helps you scale up new heights during the exponential phase. Traditional things like college education (good ones) & brands provide stability.

In a highly competitive world, designing a career is getting complicated. Finding meaning through your work is even harder.

You need every tool in your toolkit: so excel where-ever you can.

According to a 2012 RTI filing, there were 8 Lakh people with more than 1 Cr in Agriculture income, who paid ZERO taxes in India.

[1] 1% farmers in India own more than 10 hectare of land. And, they are by no standards poor.

And, as per a paper by the erstwhile Planning Commission, if we could tax even 0.04% richest farmers, it would generate 50,000 Cr of tax gains.

[2] This money is enough to run the MGNREGA scheme for a year.

This post is not against farmers.
It is about getting the rich to pay their fair dues.

[3] It doesn't make much sense why a normal corporate employee making 25K/month should be carrying the burden of taxes for Crorepati farmers.

Widening the tax base would not hurt the government's revenues.

And, it would improve the life of a normal tax payer.

But, guess how many political parties are talking about it?

The TL;DR if you're bumped from your flight:

1. For delays under 2 hours (domestic) or 4 hours (international), you get up to $775

2. For longer delays, you get up to $1,550

3. Ask for amenities like food, hotel, etc if needed

[7] Not debating politics with others (especially followers of any political party).
[8] Travelling when and where you like.
[9] Taking time off from work.
10] Spending time with family and friends.
[11] Smiling often. And, being a positive person.
[12] Working on your legacy: having a very clear answer-- how will people remember you, once you are gone. And, working towards that purpose everyday.
