There’s a woman I buy fish from around my area. She has a teenage daughter.
Her mum wasn't around, so she asked if she could use my phone to call her.
The moment I gave her my phone, you should have seen how excited she was.
She said, "Ah aunty, na iPhone you dey use? You be big girl o!"
She called her mum, gave me back my phone, handed me my fish, and as I was about to leave, she said:
"The day man go buy me this kind phone, my life don better."
I immediately asked her, "So you no fit buy am for yourself when you grow up?"
She replied, "Abeg, the phone too cost. I no go like use my own money buy am."
This really got me thinking.
Parents of this generation have a lot of work to do. We need to teach our daughters that they can work hard and buy nice things for themselves. They shouldn't believe their future depends on what a man can give them.
I’ll report to her mother whenever I see her.
