public blockchains are built to be open, everything is visible... of course it is great for trust, but not so great for privacy.
you see, as more real financial activity moves on-chain, that openness starts to feel like a problem.
so what exactly is going wrong? let’s break down the core problems Seismic is trying to solve.
→ forced transparency on public blockchains
on most public blockchains, everything is open for anyone to see, transactions, wallet balances, and contract activity.
it is good for transparency, but it becomes a problem when people need privacy, not every payment or financial move should be visible to the whole world.
→ no built-in (protocol-level) privacy
most blockchains were not designed with privacy at their core, so if you want privacy, you usually have to add extra tools on top. that makes things more complicated and still doesn’t fully protect all the data.
→ limited use for fintech and real-world finance
financial apps deal with sensitive information, like salaries, loans, savings, payments.
companies can not risk exposing this kind of data publicly.
because of that, many fintech businesses avoid building fully on public blockchains.
→risk of exploitation (e.g., front- running)
since transactions are visible before they are finalized, people can watch and copy them.
for example, in trading or auctions, someone can see a move and quickly jump in ahead of it.... this creates unfair situations.
→ poor composability with existing privacy solutions
some privacy solutions exist, but they can be hard to connect with other apps.
this makes it difficult for different systems to work smoothly together.

seismic is trying to fix all this by building privacy directly into the foundation of the blockchain.
instead of adding privacy as an extra layer, it makes encryption part of how the network works from the start.
