A major innovation milestone for Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
A team of graduate students emerged Best Overall Pitch winners at the STI Future Makers Hackathon 2026 during National Science Week.
Their solution, ZuulaCare GastroDx™️, addresses the challenge of limited access to reliable diagnostics, particularly in underserved communities.
Congratulations, team.

ZuulaCare GastroDx™️ is a novel dual-target molecular diagnostic test capable of detecting Helicobacter pylori and Salmonella Typhi simultaneously from a single stool sample.
By integrating LAMP amplification with CRISPR-Cas12a detection, the innovation enables rapid, accurate, and point-of-care diagnoses, transforming access to healthcare.
The award-winning team was led by Musau Immanuel Afrika (microbiology), alongside Mutyaba Ronald, Moses Ainembabazi, Victor Mugambe, and Edith Mirembe.
With mentorship from Abel Walekhwa and academic guidance from Prof. Joel Bazira, this achievement reflects the power of interdisciplinary research and innovation at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
Congratulations to Mr Ronald Mutyaba, a Pharmaceutical Scientist, and his team.
We urge H.E @KagutaMuseveni & the @GovUganda to eliminate discriminatory policies like Clause 31 of the NDHPA Bill that hinder innovation and limit such talent from thriving. @Mglsd_UG@ilo@FIP_org
Ugx. 300M for Ugandan diagnostics🦠🇺🇬
ZUULA CARE team wins Future Makers Hackathon 2026 at #NationalScienceWeek today.
Their 15-min, equipment-free DNA test ends Typhoid vs ulcer misdiagnosis at point of care. No lab. No antibiotic guesswork.

Warmest congratulations to Joel Bazira on his promotion to the rank of Professor of Microbiology at @MbararaUST.
This well-earned milestone reflects his outstanding contribution to scientific research and his unwavering commitment to excellence in medical education.
Congrats to Dr. Wasswa Fredrickson B for his work on using MinION Whole Genome Sequencing for Cryptococcal Meningitis (CM) diagnosis.
His research provides valuable methods for DNA extraction in resource-limited settings, paving the way for better genotyping and treatment outcomes for HIV patients.
#32ndMUSTGrad #FiredUp
Congratulations to Dr. Kennedy Kassaza. He developed and validated a Mismatch Amplification Mutation Assay (MAMA-PCR) for the rapid, accurate, and affordable detection of genetic markers in Cryptococcus neoformans.
This tool will significantly boost molecular diagnostic capacity in Uganda!
#32ndMUSTGrad #iredUp
"Officially a graduate! 🎓🎉 Yesterday marked the end of one chapter at #MUST and the beginning of another. Grateful for the journey and excited for what's to come! #MUST30thgraduation.
Exceptional Researchers: Out of all the researchers who disseminated their research findings at the conference #MUST18thARDC, there were only two undergraduate researchers.
These were;
-Immaculate Karungi
-Musau Immanuel Afrika
Congratulations on this milestone.
Musau Immanuel Afrika presented his research findings titled ''HRPS and PLDH performance comparison as rapid diagnostic tools for symptomatic malaria patients at Rugazi HC IV in Rubirizi district.
#MUST18thARDC
Immaculate Karungi the only female undergraduate researcher at the #MUST18thARDC disseminated her findings.
Her study topic was ''Prevalence and factors associated with hypercholesterolemia among patients with visual impairment at Ruharo Eye Centre in Mbarara Uganda''
Assoc. Prof. Joel Bazira appreciated the @GovUganda for its support towards research development at @MbararaUST. He applauded the team behind the #MUST18thARDC for making it happen.
Dear Lord,
Today, help me to embrace reality. Expose what doesn’t serve my best interest. When I can't control what's happening, push me to control how I respond, since there is where my power is. I boldly declare that my success will be a journey, and not a destination. Amen🙏🏾
