It's really happening! My book 'Innovation and Modernisation in Contemporary Russia:
Science Towns, Technology Parks and Very Limited Success' is now being printed -

Very excited to announce - in a bid to make it seem real to me - that I'm now under contract with @routledgebooks (of @tandfonline) for my manuscript tentatively titled 'Igniting innovation and modernization in Russia’. Let the fun (madness) begin!
A big day for researchers interested in UK economic policy!
@hmtreasury has published its first ever “Areas of Research Interest” document, setting out the research questions the Treasury would most like to see answered.
This Budget supports British science and technology with Research and Development spending rising to a record level of over £20 billion.
The Department of Science, Innovation and Technology’s R&D budget rises by 8.5% in real terms to £13.9 billion.
So surprised with @MazzucatoM's Just Transition for the Amazon proposal that will share my reactions also in English: 1) striking superficial, incomplete and disconnected from Amazonian reality, with generic proposals, invokes local knowledge but imposes "green industries"
I welcome the Chancellor's commitment to protect core research funding as well as support for R&D in high-tech industries like aerospace automotive and clean energy
As @CommonsSITC Chair I look forward to deep dive Budget analysis with @MPGeorgeFreeman and the whole Committee
@Kristen_Perrin@Waterstones I saw your book in pride of place by the entrance of my closest Waterstones last weekend! I nearly bought it on impulse - but then remembered all the books I've bought over the past few years waiting for me to read them...
🚨New list of UK Cabinet Committees just dropped - encouraging to see Science & Tech very much still there alongside the new Mission Boards (and still chaired by the PM)
Remit is "to consider matters related to S&T, to drive the UK's economic growth and national security".
Over the weekend, we @ESRC made a big announcement about an investment that I hope will be of interest to anyone who cares about using evidence to make better public policy, or about harnessing AI for social science.
I wanted to tell you a bit more about it, so here's a 🧵
In Russian diaspora, this is a story as big as it can be. The team of the late @navalny, the leader of the Russian opposition, investigated the attempt on @leonidvolkov's life in July 2024, and concluded that it was organized by Leonid Nevzlin, a billionaire exile from @khodorkovsky_en's entourage.
I cannot wrap my head around this information yet. Khodorkovsky spent 10 years in jail; Putin expropriated his multi-billion dollar business. Since 2013, Khodorkovsky was a prominent voice in exile. (Nevzlin fled to Israel in 2003, when Khodorkovsky's empire was under assault from Putin.)
What I can say is that @navalny's team has had an impeccable reputation in investigative journalism. With Alexei and then without him, they uncovered many critical episode's of Putin's regime corruption, their influence networks, their military connections, etc. I'd say that @fbkinfo has been responsible for as many big investigations on Putin than all other world media combined.
Still, it's hard to wrap my head around it.
Thank you to all who voted and to @DawnButlerBrent for such a positive campaign.
I've spoken to MPs from all sides as part of the election and I know this @UKParliament is really excited about the potential of science, innovation and technology to transform lives for the better
A recent @RANDEurope study looked at how China, the US, the UK & the EU approach the confluence of gene editing and machine learning. The study found that policymakers are just beginning to take action - check the study out here: https://t.co/VR1fFTGeur
Peter Stevenson, our chief policy advisor says:
“The use of selective breeding over the past 50 years has brought a huge number of animal welfare problems... Do we really want to accelerate this process with gene editing?”

James C. Scott, my mentor and friend, has passed away. A legendary social scientist, Jim was an exceptional scholar and one of the kindest people I've ever met. His contributions to political science and anthropology are unparalleled.
