Our resources are being adapted to a wide range of schools across Australia. This week we are spotlighting Borinya Wangaratta Community Partnership, a specialist school setting for young people who become disengaged or disconnected from mainstream schooling. 

The word Borinya comes from the local Bangerang language and means ‘ana’ or branch of a river that has parted from its main course. In 2026, Borinya serves 47 students from Years 8 to 12, with 13% of students being from a First Nations background. 

Ochre resources have been embedded as the core teaching resource for literacy and numeracy. The resources have been adapted to suit small‑group instruction, one‑to‑one support and re‑engagement with learning for students experiencing interrupted schooling. 

Since implementing Ochre resources, Borinya has seen:

⭐ Increased classroom engagement and greater student readiness to learn, supported by clear, structured lessons and predictable routines.
⭐ Growth in literacy and numeracy knowledge, skills and understanding.
⭐ Students becoming more confident in discussing their learning.
⭐ A shared language across literacy and numeracy lessons, supporting reflective conversations with staff and peers.
⭐ Wellbeing improvements arising from students’ success in learning.

We are thrilled to highlight the impact of our resources in schools across the country! This week we are spotlighting Australia’s southernmost school. Bruny Island District School is a small public school on Bruny Island, Tasmania, with a current enrolment of 62 students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Bruny Island consists of three composite classes: K–P–1, Years 2–3, and Years 4–6. The Ochre units have enabled teachers to deliver high-quality whole-class instruction to students with a diverse range of learning needs within composite classrooms. Over the past 18 months, the Years 2–3 and Years 4–6 classes have collectively completed 10 novel studies. 

The Bruny Island teachers have reflected that: 

🌟 The Ochre units have been a massive timesaver for staff, and have raised expectations through more challenging content, taught earlier. 

🌟 Learning in a multi-age environment has been particularly beneficial, as younger students are exposed to more complex texts and ideas earlier, while also participating in rich discussions with older students. 

🌟 Teachers are using the novel study units to create meaningful connections across other curriculum areas, including science and HASS. 

🌟 Bruny Island’s Year 2–3 class is team-taught by two teachers. The Ochre units have made it easy to handover the class thanks to their clear structure and lesson plans.

2025 was a big year for Ochre, our partners, and the schools, teachers and school leaders we support.

We recently published the Ochre Education | Impact Teaching Group 2025 Annual Report.

It includes case studies of how schools are putting our knowledge-rich, evidence-informed resources to work – nine schools and three school systems, from a 62 student school on Bruny Island to a system of 292 schools across Melbourne and beyond. Composite classrooms, secondary maths faculties, a specialist setting for students disengaged from mainstream schooling.

In 2025 we launched Impact Assessment, joined forces with Teach Well, entered a 10 year partnership with the Tasmanian Government as part of the Lifting Literacy Plan, and moved our Advancing Curriculum for Equity program into pilot implementation across schools in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

SpringMath runs on a continuous cycle: screen, teach, monitor, adjust.

A complete multi-tiered system of support for maths:

SpringMath is a comprehensive mathematics MTSS (multi-tiered system of support) solution: universal screening, targeted classwide intervention, progress monitoring, and individual intervention working together to support teachers in closing persistent maths gaps.

Screening, tailored teaching materials and progress monitoring all sit in the one system so classwide learning gaps can be addressed quickly and fewer students need costly Tier 2 and Tier 3 services.

Response to intervention is calculated weekly based on students' daily practice, which serves as built-in progress monitoring.

SpringMath will be offered to Australian schools progressively from the 2027 school year.

Bringing school leaders together to share what works.

On Monday 24 August, the ACE Project brought together school leaders from the Northern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales for an evening of discussion and networking at Yirranma Place, Darlinghurst.

The ACE Roundtable provided an opportunity to hear directly from school leaders about their improvement journeys and experiences implementing high-quality curriculum in diverse school contexts.

Conversation explored the challenges, successes and practical lessons that emerge when schools work to turn evidence and curriculum ambition into everyday classroom practice.

A great evening of honest conversation, shared learning and connection across jurisdictions.

Supported and funded by the Paul Ramsay Foundation, the Advancing Curriculum for Equity (ACE) Project is an Ochre Education initiative supporting priority equity schools in NT and WA.

SpringMath is coming to Australian schools in 2027, under an exclusive agreement between Ochre Education and SpringMath Accelerate.

It is a complete multi-tiered system of support for maths: universal screening, classwide tier 1.5 intervention, progress monitoring and individual tier two and three intervention in one system.

Based on 20 years of research by Dr Amanda VanDerHeyden, SpringMath is paper-based and takes 15 minutes a day. Teachers lead a consistent daily routine that focuses on creating accuracy and fluency in foundational maths skills. In three randomised controlled trials, students using SpringMath were half as likely to fail mathematics assessments.

14 school leaders. Three jurisdictions. One shared focus: improving teaching and learning.

Last week, 14 school leaders from ACE pilot schools across the Northern Territory and Western Australia travelled to New South Wales to visit partner schools and see how schools can use high-quality curriculum and effective instructional practice to support the learning of students.

The Advancing Curriculum for Equity (ACE) Project is an Ochre Education initiative focused on supporting priority equity schools in NT and WA, supported and funded by the Paul Ramsay Foundation. The ACE Partner School Model creates opportunities for school leaders to connect, collaborate and learn from one another.

Across the week, our ACE Pilot leaders visited NSW schools serving priority equity students, hearing directly from principals about their improvement journeys, exploring the practical realities of high quality curriculum implementation with priority equity student cohorts and reflecting on what they can take back to their own schools.

We love hearing about how teachers and schools are building on our units and linking them to their local contexts. Thank you to Lysterfield Primary School in Victoria, who reached out to share the story of Sandy, Australia’s very own war horse. Sandy was the only horse out of 136 000 horses sent to WW1 to return home to Australia. 

Not only did Lysterfield PS students read and enjoy War Horse, they then connected with the Sandy the War Horse Committee and visited a statue of Sandy in nearby Wodonga. They even had a visit from Ross, the president of the Committee, dressed in military regalia and sitting astride his faithful horse, Jasper.

We’re pleased that you and your students found the War Horse unit so engaging and that it led to learning more about Australia’s history.
