Meet the Karner blue butterfly. They're blue, they're beautiful, and they're endangered..
The males are bright blue. The females are more brown-gray with blue near the body and little orange markings along the wings. Both are tiny, roughly postage-stamp sized, and both depend on a plant most people have never thought about: wild blue lupine.
Not the big ornamental Russell lupines. Karner blue caterpillars need wild blue lupine, Lupinus perennis. It is their only larval host plant. If the plant disappears, the butterfly disappears with it.
And that's the problem. Karner blues evolved with open, sandy places like oak savannas and pine barrens, habitats that were historically kept open by fire and disturbance. When those places get developed, sprayed, mowed at the wrong time, or allowed to grow into dense shade, the lupine fades out. And when the lupine goes, the caterpillars have nothing else to eat.
Adults also need nectar, so helping them is not just "plant one lupine and walk away." They need patches of wild lupine, nearby native flowers blooming through their flight periods, sandy open habitat, and fewer pesticides.
So if you live where Karner blues still hang on, or in their historic range, this is the simple version: plant wild blue lupine, buy nursery-grown plants or seed from a reputable native source, add native nectar flowers around it, skip the pesticides, and support savanna and pine barren restoration.
