Why Houthis threaten Pakistan

A senior Houthi commander has warned Pakistan and Turkey of dire consequences if they join hands with Saudi Arabia.

The development comes after Pakistan and Turkey indicated they might operationalise the Makkah Defence Alliance.

While Pakistan is still favouring diplomacy, it has clearly taken a far clearer stance against the Houthis.

There is also chatter in policy circles that the Houthis are increasingly serving the Israeli agenda.

There is also another shift. Pakistan has decided to call Houthis a militia, a characterisation that is significant.

Similarly, Turkey has taken a series of measures against Iran. Ankara has banned Iran's airline and shut down its banks.

These measures have made the Houthis and Iran realise that Pakistan and Turkey may have been inching closer to choosing sides.

Some are arguing that even if Pakistan and Turkey join Saudi Arabia, that would not make any difference, citing the failure of the US in its previous campaign against the Iranian-backed group in Yemen.

However, those people miss an important point. The direct involvement of Pakistan and Turkey would have far more implications and would take the regional escalation to a different level.

There would certainly be consequences for Pakistan and Turkey for such a decision, but Iran would also feel the real heat.

Pakistan and Turkey share borders with Iran and are significant powers in the Muslim world. Losing the support of Pakistan and Turkey has its own cost.

There is growing concern among regional Muslim countries that Iran wants to be the new hegemon after the US war ends. There are concerns that Iran could create trouble for them. The emergence of the Makkah Defence Alliance is to deter this proposition.

So, we are entering a very delicate phase of this conflict. Pakistan is dispatching another high-level delegation to Iran for a diplomatic solution, while President Trump has said he is all set to take a major decision on Iran. He said the move could be either the complete destruction of Iran or a potential big bargain.

One thing is certain. The longer the conflict persists, the more difficult it would be for countries like Pakistan to maintain a delicate balance.
