This is one my favorite celebrity stories of all time:

When James Doohan, Scotty in Star Trek, received a letter from a fan saying she was suicidal, he
responded to her and said he wanted to see her at his next convention.

When he’d hear from her, he’d invite her to the next convention and the next. For years, he’d speak with her and tell her positive things.

Then, one year, she stopped coming to conventions and he feared the worst.

8 years later, he received a
letter from the woman.

She told him that his kindness and encouragement saved her life, and that she had earned her Masters degree in Electronic
Engineering.

Doohan would later say connecting with her was "the best thing I have ever done in my life."
