I had this conversation with a priest a couple of years ago because I’ve lost someone to suicide and to also think that Robin Williams is not in heaven was a sad thought as well.

His response was something along the lines of a person’s responsibility can be reduced by severe depression, despair, mental illness, trauma, fear, or extreme emotional suffering.

And that the Church teaches that for a sin to fully separate someone from God, a person must have:

Full knowledge
Full consent
Clear freedom of will

When someone is in deep psychological pain, their freedom and judgment may be impaired. They may not be acting with the clarity or freedom that moral teaching assumes.

It made a ton of sense and I felt better about it. We have no idea what he was suffering from so we should not be so quick to judge what he did.
