It was another big week in college basketball, as it has been for months. In-Game Edge finished 45-30, a win rate of 60%. We squeezed out small edges in NBA and NFL, with the busiest days coming on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

No win was better than SMU, who nailed a three at the buzzer to cover the +1.5 live line. Another example where it pays to wait for the live line came between Minnesota and Illinois. Illinois was listed as a 15-point favorite pre-game. Our alert went out with value at -4.5. Illinois won by 10.

This Week's Edge Tip: Beware of Popular Trends

One of the easiest traps in sports betting, especially this time of year, is putting too much weight on surface-level trends.

During the NFL playoffs, you’ll hear things like “this team is 7–1 against the spread in playoff road games” or “favorites have covered X straight games.” In college basketball, it shows up as “this team is 10–2 in their last 12” or “they’ve covered four straight at home.”

The problem isn’t that trends exist. It’s that many of them don’t actually explain why something is happening. Without context, they can be misleading.

Think of the Mike Tomlin narrative. "The Steelers are 62% ATS at home in the Mike Tomlin Era." The problem is the Mike Tomlin Era last 19 years. His Super Bowl was in 2008. His last AFC Championship was 2010. What does Mike Tomlin's record with Ben Roethlisberger have to do with Aaron Rodgers in 2026?

Teams change. Rotations change. Injuries matter. Game states matter. A trend that looks strong on paper might be built on opponents who aren’t comparable, situations that no longer apply, or results that were driven by one or two outlier games.

This is especially true in live betting, where conditions are constantly changing. A pre-game trend doesn’t always survive once pace shifts, foul trouble sets in, or a game script flips. What mattered last month, or even last week, may have little relevance once the game is being played.

The goal isn’t to ignore trends entirely, it’s to avoid letting them distract from what’s actually happening right now. Context beats history when the game is live.
