In Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, a 23-year-old woman named Reena Joshi was harassed to such an extent by a young man named Zakir that she was driven to commit suicide.

In this incident, which occurred in Shipra village, the 23-year-old woman took her own life by consuming acid.

Zakir had been stalking her for the past five months; he would constantly hover around her—morning, noon, and evening—insisting that she leave her husband and children to marry him.

Two days prior to the incident, Zakir attempted to force himself upon Reena while br@ndishing a knife.

Out of shame, she endured the h@rassment in silence for days, but when the situation became unbearable, she committed suicide.

The incident sparked tension and unrest in the village, requiring the deployment of police forces from five different stations to restore calm. Zakir was arrested and sent to jail; locals are now demanding that his house be demolished using a bulldozer.

Reena Joshi lived with her husband, Sundar Joshi, and their two children near the Shipra Haat grounds. She consumed acid on Saturday (June 10, 2023).

Her family rushed her to the district hospital; although she was referred to Indore due to her critical condition, the family took her to a hospital in Dewas instead, where she passed away. Zakir’s father is named Akku Munshi.

Women in the area have demanded that Zakir be hanged, stating that if that is not possible, he should be handed over to them.

Reena’s brother recounted that after consuming the acid, his sister called him, pleading, "Save me, I am dying." He arrived on his motorcycle within half an hour of receiving the call. Upon arrival, he found Reena alone and vomiting.

Her husband was informed of the situation. The brother also revealed that Reena had previously told him how Zakir used to pressure her to marry him and convert to I$lam.

The husband had suggested resolving the matter between themselves, but the incident occurred before that could happen.
