"No one has provided a deeper challenge to Black Theology than, has the philosophical critique of William Jones. His book, Is God a White Racist(1973), shook Black theologians out of their "liberation complacency and forced them to deal with the problem of theodicy
at a deeper level If God is liberating the Black poor from oppression, as Black theologians say, where is the liberation event that can serve as evidence of that fact The question has not been answered to anyone's satisfaction,
If God is not for us, if God is not against white racists, then God is a
murderer, and we had better kill God.
—JAMES H. ConE, A Black Theology of Liberation
It is impossible to confront a racist society, with the meaning of human
existence grounded in commitment to the divine, without at the same
time challenging the very existence of the national structure and all of its
institutions. . . .
If the concept of God has any validity or any use, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of Him.
-James Baldwin
