2000–2012 gave us 2Baba, D’banj, P-Square, Wande Coal, Timaya, 9ice, M.I, Naeto C, Banky W, Darey, Asa, Duncan Mighty, Bracket, Styl-Plus, Mo’Hits, Plantashun Boiz, Olu Maintain, J Martins, Paul Play, African China, Nigga Raw, Ruggedman, Dagrin, Terry G, Ice Prince and Psquare casually dropping nationwide anthems.

And I am not even done.

Different genres. Different voices. Different identities. You could hear 10 seconds of a song and know EXACTLY who was singing.

Today, Burna is exceptional. Wizkid is exceptional. Davido has built a monster career. Nobody is denying that.

But using Burna Boy to defend an entire generation is already an own goal. 😂

One Burna cannot fight 15 different monsters from that era.

Wande Coal alone influenced the vocal style of half the boys that came after him. 2Baba was already making timeless records while some of today’s “quality” artistes were learning their ABCs. P-Square had African countries singing word for word before streaming farms and TikTok challenges became career strategies. D’banj had superstar presence when Nigerian pop still had to fight for respect.

And please don’t start the “better production quality” argument.

Technology improved. Of course records sound cleaner today. That doesn’t automatically mean the musicians got better. Give those 2000s producers and artistes today’s equipment, distribution, streaming platforms and social media and see madness.

The funniest part is that half of today’s biggest artistes will happily tell you who THEY grew up listening to.

You’re calling it the worst era.

Your faves call it their inspiration.

Quantity? Today wins.

Streaming numbers? Today wins.

Access to global audiences? Today wins.

But originality, distinct voices, memorable groups, songwriting and the sheer number of artistes who could command Nigeria with actual HITS?

2000–2012 will embarrass this era badly..

10 years ago, I worked with Davido for the first time.
A decade passed. ORIADÉ arrived.
Directing B4 B4, felt less like a job and more like an offering. Because this video is everything I believe art should be. A great cinematography and Beautiful storytelling, never one at the expense of the other.
