“We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
- Benjamin Franklin
TODAY IN HISTORY: SEPTEMBER 9, 1776
On September 9, 1776, the Continental Congress formally declared the name of the new nation to be the United States of America. This replaced the term United Colonies, which had been commonly used.

96% OF TRUMP’S ENDORSEMENTS PAID OFF IN THE PRIMARIES.
Frank Luntz says that is the 2026 primary score. The RNC is telling Republicans something else: keep your distance from the president, and you could lose 15 to 20 percent of your base.
Both can be true. Primaries reward the party. Generals ask everyone else.
Independents do not vote in most of those primaries. They vote in November. That is why a primary-winning streak isn't the same as a general-election map.

TODAY IN HISTORY: FORD PARDONS NIXON
“It is not the ultimate fate of Richard Nixon that most concerns me. It is the immediate future of this great country.”
- Gerald Ford, September 8, 1974
One month after Nixon resigned, Ford pardoned him. Ford said a long trial would keep the country in the ditch. Critics said the pardon put a president above the law. It likely cost Ford the 1976 election.
Independents can hold both facts at once.
A country cannot stay in a trial forever. A country also cannot tell people that a president is above the law. That is the hard part. The party fight is the easy part.

“Turn your wounds into wisdom.”
Oprah Winfrey
OPRAH GOES NATIONAL: 40 YEARS AGO TODAY
Oprah built the biggest daytime audience in the country by talking to people as people. That is still the independent habit. Hear the story before you pick a team. She proved one voice could reach a country that the parties had already split into two rooms.

“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
LABOR DAY: THE WORK CAME FIRST
The first big Labor Day parade was in New York City on September 5, 1882. Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday in 1894.
This day is not a Democratic holiday or a Republican holiday. It is for the people who keep the country running when the slogans stop.
Independents can hold two thoughts at once. Work should be honored. No party owns the worker.

BIPARTISANSHIP AT WORK: NO SHUTDOWN BEFORE THE ELECTION
The Senate passed it 90–6 in August. The House passed it 370–48 this week. It now goes to the president to keep the government open through December 11.
That was not a love letter between the parties. It was a decision to fight about spending after the midterms instead of closing the government first.
Independents should notice the unglamorous part. Most of both chambers voted to keep the lights on. The argument can wait. The paychecks should not.

Highest in Gallup's trend since 2006. Up 10 points in one year.
Democrats: 91%.
Independents: 90%.
Republicans: 83%.
Independents said 78% in 2024. Then 85%. Now 90%. Up every year, under both presidents.

Gloria Steinem died at 92.
“The truth will set you free. But first it will piss you off.”
She co-founded Ms. magazine. She pushed equal pay, reproductive rights, and women running for office from both parties.

WENDELL BERRY, 1934–2026
“The soil under the grass is dreaming of a young forest, and under the pavement the soil is dreaming of grass.”
The Kentucky farmer and writer died this week at 92.
He was not a party man. He feared what happens to a country when it forgets the land, the neighbor, and the small place that has to last.
He thought we were spending down the soil, the towns, and the patience it takes to live with each other.

BIPARTISANSHIP AT WORK: THE DRONE UNIT
A Democratic senator, two Republicans, and independent Sen. Angus King sent the Army a letter Tuesday. They want a briefing on why a 600-soldier unit in the 173rd Airborne was told to stop specializing in drones and go back to regular airborne infantry.
This is what bipartisanship looks like. Politics should stop at the waters edge.

TODAY IN HISTORY: 1969, THE FIRST U.S. ATM
Chemical Bank in New York switched on a machine that handed out cash. People said it would replace every teller and shut down every bank.
Not all the tellers lost their jobs. Banks did not all close. The machine did the simple cash withdrawals. People still did the rest of the work.
A lot of people say AI will take every job. That is the same fear. Some jobs will change. That is not the same as every job disappearing.

SEPTEMBER 1, 1939: GERMANY INVADES POLAND
“When peace has been broken anywhere, the peace of all countries everywhere is in danger.”
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
German forces crossed the Polish border. Britain and France were at war within days. That is the start of World War II in Europe.
Four years earlier, the United States had passed a Neutrality Act to stay out. The vote was popular. It did not keep the war from reaching American shores.

AUGUST 31, 1935. FDR SIGNS THE NEUTRALITY ACT:
“I have approved this Joint Resolution because it was intended...to avoid any action which might involve us in war.”
Ninety-one years ago today, President Roosevelt signed a law meant to keep the United States out of foreign wars. It banned arms sales to countries already fighting and limited American ships in war zones. Roosevelt called it an expression of the country’s desire to stay out. It did not last.
Democracies can vote for distance. War can still arrive. The work is to see the difference between hope and reality.
By 1941, the U.S. was sending aid to Britain. After Pearl Harbor, the country was in the war.

AUGUST 31, 1997: THE PEOPLE'S PRINCESS
“I am not a political figure, nor do I want to be one. I come with my heart.”
Twenty-nine years ago tonight, a car hit a pillar in a Paris tunnel. Diana died at 36.
The world stopped for a woman who held babies with HIV, walked a minefield to help ban those weapons, and demanded better for children.
Investigators said the driver was impaired. The frenzy still tells you something. Institutions protect the brand. People wanted a human being.
