Modern places of abandonment or catastrophe, it occurred to me during my time at the lake, are affecting primarily for their immediacy.

The chaotic climate, the shrivelling lake, and the junk of human settlements, feel like the ultimate rebuke to our myopia.

During the Soviet era, when foreigners were prohibited from entering Karakalpakstan, the Aral's vanishing became apparent via satellite.
