A boy in Bihar was walking to the orchards when he noticed the railway track was broken.

He was 12 years old. It was about 10 degrees. He had no phone.

He took off his shirt.

His name is Bhim Yadav.

He was in class 5 at a government middle school in Mangalpur, a village in West Champaran district, about 260 km from Patna. His father, Janardan Yadav, is a daily wage labourer who works in the fields.

In December 2017 he was walking to the orchards near his village when he crossed the Gorakhpur to Narkatiaganj railway line and saw that the track was broken.

Then he heard a train coming.

He had no way to warn anyone. There was no station nearby, no signal box, nobody to run to. Whatever was going to be done had to be done by him, in the next minute or so.

He took off his red shirt in the cold and ran along the track towards the train, waving it over his head.

The driver could not have known what a shirt meant. From a moving engine, a boy waving on the tracks is just a boy on the tracks.

Bhim did not stop. He kept running towards it and kept waving.

The driver applied the emergency brakes.

The train stopped before it reached the broken section. Hundreds of people were on board.

Afterwards he explained it very simply. I did not know how to stop the train, he said, but I used my presence of mind. I took off my shirt and ran on the tracks after watching a train coming.

Then he said something that tells you exactly how old he is.

Once, he said, he had visited a relative in a nearby village, and everyone there was talking about the bravery of some boy. He wanted to do something too, so that people would talk about him as well.

The district education officer said he would be rewarded. The railways said they were proud of him. Virender Sehwag posted about him and called him his hero.

And in the middle of all of that, this is what Bhim told a reporter.

I love studying and I want to get a good job after I finish. Mathematics and science are my favourite subjects. But my parents are poor and cannot arrange my study materials.

A 12 year old stopped a train with his shirt to save several hundred people he had never met.

Then he went back to a school where his family could not afford his books.

A man in Bangalore bought 3 tickets for an afternoon film.He got to his seat on time.

Then the cinema played 25 minutes of advertisements before the film began.

Because of that, the film finished late. He had work calls booked afterwards. He had to cancel them.

So he took the biggest cinema chain in the country to court.

His name is Abhishek M R.

He is a lawyer in Bangalore. He was 31 at the time.

The date was 26th December 2023. The film was Sam Bahadur. The cinema was a PVR INOX.

His ticket said the show would begin at a certain time. It did not begin at that time.

What played first was 25 minutes of commercials. Not trailers for other films. Advertisements.

Now, everybody has sat through this. You reach the hall on time, and then you sit in the dark watching advertisements while the film waits. It is so normal that nobody even thinks of it as a problem any more.

He thought it was a problem.

He filed a case at the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Bangalore.

His argument was simple. He had paid for a service. That service was advertised to start at a fixed time. It did not start at that time. His own time was taken from him without his agreement, and it cost him his work calls.

The cinema chain defended itself. It said the law requires cinemas to play about 10 minutes of public service announcements before a film, so some delay cannot be helped.

The commission accepted that 10 minutes may be required.

It did not accept that 10 minutes explains 25.

The order went against the company.

It was told to pay him 20,000 rupees as damages, and 8,000 rupees towards the cost of fighting the case. It was also told to pay 1 lakh rupees to the Consumer Welfare Fund, which is a government fund for consumer protection work.

The wording of the judgement is the part worth remembering.

The commission wrote that in the new era, time is considered as money, and each person's time is very precious. It said that 25 to 30 minutes is a considerable amount of time to sit idle in a theatre watching unnecessary advertisements. It said people have tight schedules and do not have time to waste.

PVR INOX runs more than 900 screens across India and Sri Lanka.

He had 3 tickets and a bill, and he did not let it go.
