Hello! We are reactivating this online space ✨and renewing our commitment to building knowledge and power against carceral institutions and practices, for those detained across the country and its occupations ✊🏾
A small thread on who we are & our past work:
1/6
Today, the SC has given one of the worst and most damaging civil rights judgments in its history.
The 2011 judgment in Arup Bhuyan’s case was one of the only checks against executive abuse of the UAPA. Today, the SC has removed that check.
We are collating a list of groups that constitute migrants or work with migrant (particularly international migrants/refugees) on issues of citizenship, labor, detention in India & have a digital presence. Please tag any organisations, collectives, networks you are familiar with.
This moment highlights hypocrisy & incoherence of so many.
Folks who condemn Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation gleefully supporting Ukrainians hurling molotovs at invaders.
Antifascists dutifully holding their tongues about the reality of fascism in Ukraine.
We will probe into what is the condition of the rest of the people who were declared as foreigners but could not be deported/sent back/extradited to Bangladesh between this period.
We had filed an RTI at Ministry of Home Affairs to get the following information on the number of people deported/sent-back/extradited to Bangladesh between 1st January 2016 to 31st August 2020.
What is strange is the option of filing an RTI against BSF on the RTI online website curated and maintained by the central government. Why are they even there if they want to claim Second Schedule of the Act?
We had filed an RTI against Border Security Force on 16/07/2020 asking the following questions. The request was forwarded to CPIO D.K. Boora (DIG OPS FHQ) on 17/07/2020. If we don't get a response by tomorrow, we will file a complaint to the Central Information Commission.
This RTI was rejected on 17/08/2020 citing Section 24 of the Right to Information Act, 2005 wherein BSF claims to be an intelligence or security organisation exempted from providing information under the Second Schedule of the Act.
Some responses to questions asked in the parliament in 2019 regarding the Assam Foreigners Tribunals and detention centres. The numbers are staggering.
