Pope Leo XIV’s call to safeguard the human person in the age of AI strongly resonates with PM Modi’s vision of AI for humanity’s future: human-centric, inclusive, trusted, responsible and welfare-oriented. Both leaders reject AI as an instrument of domination, exclusion or dehumanisation.
@PMOIndia@narendramodi@DrSJaishankar@Pontifex@DDNewslive@PIB_India
As the world witnesses the unprecedented transformative power of Artificial Intelligence where technological prowess also holds many uncertainties,
Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence" is a major moral reflection on the age of AI. There are many similarities in the vision enunciated by the Pope and pronouncements made by Prime Minister Narendra on AI.
Both have emphasised that AI must remain human-centred and not the machine.
Pope Leo XIV:
“In the era of artificial intelligence, when human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain profoundly human.”
“We must lovingly safeguard the grandeur of humanity… the splendor of which no machine can ever replace.”
Prime Minister Modi:
“Technology exists to serve humanity, not replace it.” [India AI Impact Summit 2026 – Pre-Summit Interview, ANI, 17 February 2026]
“How to make AI human-centric rather than machine-centric, sensitive and responsible rather than reckless – this is the core purpose of the Global AI Impact Summit.” [India AI Impact Summit 2026 – Inaugural Address, New Delhi, 19 February 2026]
Both place human dignity, judgment and responsibility above technological capability.
Both leaders see AI governance as a shared human challenge requiring ethical, participatory and international frameworks.
Pope Leo XIV:
“We cannot allow a handful of actors to dictate these processes on their own.”
“Building a world in which everyone can flourish requires shared responsibility and courage.”
Prime Minister Modi:
“Just as we have agreements and protocols for various international issues, we have to work together to create a global framework for the ethical use of AI.” [GPAI Summit, New Delhi, 12 December 2023]
“For this, we need a global compact on AI, built upon certain fundamental principles. These should include effective human oversight, safety-by-design, transparency and strict prohibitions on the use of AI for deepfakes, crime and terrorist activities.” [India AI Impact Summit 2026 – Pre-Summit Interview, ANI, 17 February 2026]
“M – Moral and Ethical Systems: AI must be built on ethical guidelines. A – Accountable Governance: Transparent rules and robust oversight.
N – National Sovereignty: Data belongs to those who generate it.
A – Accessible and Inclusive: AI must not be a monopoly, but a multiplier.
V – Valid and Legitimate: AI must be lawful and verifiable.” [India AI Impact Summit 2026 – Inaugural Address, New Delhi, 19 February 2026]
The Pope’s framework is rooted in human dignity, the common good, solidarity, subsidiarity and social justice. PM Modi’s MANAV framework translates similar principles into an Indian civilizational idiom. Both converge on the same proposition: AI must be ethical, accountable, inclusive, legitimate and centred on the human person.
