The allegation that President Mahama "gave" mines in Ghana to his brother is rooted in a series of disputes over several major mining projects that have drawn sharp criticism from the political opposition, civil society, and international investors.

The Black Volta Gold Project, Accusations of "Industrial Espionage"

The Black Volta gold project in northwest Ghana has become the central focus of these allegations. The international private equity firm Ibaera Capital has accused Engineers & Planners (E&P) owned by the president’s brother, Ibrahim Mahama of engaging in "industrial espionage" to seize control of the project, valued at approximately $250 million . Ibaera's managing partner claimed that emails, reviewed by the mining publication Miningmx, showed Azumah's legal counsel secretly preparing documents against the company's interests while being paid by them . They alleged that Ghanaian directors, the legal adviser, and others conspired with E&P to undermine existing shareholders and take control of the investment .

E&P has rejected these allegations and denied any corporate wrongdoing . An arbitration hearing in London is expected to consider aspects of this dispute in September 2026 .

A separate controversy has emerged around the Damang gold mine, operated by South Africa's Gold Fields. The Minority in Ghana's Parliament has accused President Mahama of a "state capture" scheme, linking his use of his brother's private jet for official travel to E&P's bid for the Damang concession . They argue this creates a conflict of interest under Article 284 of the 1992 Constitution .

The Minority alleges the bidding process for the mine, set to have its lease expire in 2026, lacks transparency and is being arranged to favour E&P . They have announced plans to petition the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the matter . A private citizen has also filed a petition with CHRAJ over the Damang Mine .

The Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) has accused the government of presiding over the politicisation and capture of natural resources, alleging that mining assets have been handed to politically connected individuals, including relatives of the President .

The controversy has also been linked to a historical precedent, with the opposition drawing parallels to a 2016 case where Ibrahim Mahama's company was granted mining leases for over 60% of Ghana's bauxite reserves a move later annulled by the Supreme Court in 2019 for violating the Constitution .
