Discussions at the White House focused on implementing the TRUST initiative, taking forward cooperation in the defence and energy domains, and strengthening the Quad, IMEEC, and I2U2 initiatives.

This is shocking. On Monday, in an amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act, the #Bangladesh government set out what “banning all the activities” of the Awami League meant.

From now on “the publication of any press statement on behalf of or in support” of the Awami League is prohibited, as is a “campaign of any kind in the mass media, online, social media or any other medium” in support of the party or “the holding of processions, meetings, or press conferences or giving public speeches.”

This will have a huge impact on not just the political rights of Awami League supporters - who basically will no longer have them - but also wider rights to freedom of expression and the media within the country.

Who would have thought that nine months on from the fall of the Hasina government, that a supposedly reformist government would enact such a repressive law.
