You can learn more about the local area and Malcolm’s visit through our previous ‘Stories to Tell’ series, where we interviewed Lakhi, the owner of the Ivy Bush pub, where there is now set to be a mural honouring the legacies of anti-racist resistance in the area. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

A pleasure to catch up with @Taj_Ali1
and local legend Raj of @indus_legacy - talking all things social cohesion, post riot responses and our collective anti-racism work across the North East region and wider UK.
You can read Taj’s verdict on the parmo for yourself!
I am looking to speak to Muslims in the North East of England about the racist riots and their experiences of Islamophobia more generally. DMs open or email in bio.

As we step into 2025, here is a look back on 2024 with Indus Legacy. 🧡🌾
A year defined by resistance, racist riots, and defiance - but also by joy, solidarity, and empowerment.
2024 was a powerful reminder of why Indus Legacy was founded and why our existence is vital.

It was an honour to gather in the name of the great Malcolm X, marking the upcoming 60th anniversary of his visit to the UK.
In 1965, just 9 days before his assassination, Malcolm X or el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz — was invited to Smethwick by the Indian Workers Association.
Last week in Nottingham, we had the privilege of sharing a platform with giants of our movement and inspiring individuals who are doing critical work to preserve Malcolm X’s legacy. Together, we reflected on the lessons we must carry forward for anti-racist resistance today. From leaders of the Asian Youth Movements of the 70s and 80s to voices like Gus John, @Taj_Ali1, @RunnymedeTrust, @ukblm, @MonitoringGroup and so many more — this gathering was a powerful opportunity to strengthen our collective fight for justice and redouble our efforts. ✊🏾
We have written about Malcolm’s visit previously, and will be covering more about this astonishing piece of history going forward.

Back again with our friends at The Auxiliary for another inspiring community meal! 🧡
Following up from our last session, @iam_tahminaali led a brilliant, reflective creative writing activity — alongside Raj and Shabnam who facilitated a discussion on the origins of racism and how it manifests in society today.
It’s great to see The Auxiliary’s long term commitment to deep anti-racist work progressing; holding space for the creative community to develop learning and discuss practical and collective actions going forward.
Creatives have always had an integral role in the struggle for justice and liberation—and they continue to play that monumental role today. ✊🏾
Starting in just over an hour: award-winning journalist @kunalpurohit joins us to speak about his new book, ‘H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars', exploring Hindu nationalist activism & culture in India. Cohosted by Histories of Activism @NESouthAsia & @Indus_Legacy.
We’re bringing award winning writer and journalist @kunalpurohit to Newcastle this Friday to speak about his new book, ‘H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars’.
Kunal’s book explores far-right Hindu nationalist activism and culture in India. Providing a totally original insight into how popular culture – and specifically sub-genres of pop music – have been subverted for political ends, with transformative and destructive consequences.
Join us for what is set to be a fascinating discussion!
4.30pm | Friday 8th Nov | Lipman Building, Room 121 @NorthumbriaUni
Co-hosted w/ @NESouthAsia & @Indus_Legacy.
