Human-wildlife conflicts are growing worldwide. In the rice fields of the Tagus river basin we made the first attempt to assess cost-effectiveness of dissuasion techniques targeting #waterbirds.

Among the Portuguese, few will know the #EuropeanRoller, despite its extraordinary colors and being one of the most endangered birds in our country. Promoting our work is a first step towards changing that!
We are already in October, but some of our #WhiteStork fledglings are still reluctant to cross the Straits! Although named after a Portuguese island, Berlenga - unlike many famous Portuguese sailors - does not seem to be at the forefront of European overseas exploration!
@evoPAA @CIBIO_InBIO Não sabia que estava tão perto! Muito sucesso nas novas aventuras Pedro! Tudo de bom para ti, se possível com alguma passarada à mistura:)
We are the Research Group of #SteppeBirds, created in February 2023. We aim to promote #research and #conservation of steppe birds and their #habitats. Are you interested in joining our Newsletter and Research Group? Follow us and subscribe! Link in the bio ⬆️
Longitudinal GPS-tracking studies are crucial to unveil the behavioural ageing patterns in long-lived species. This is such a great example, with #GriffonVultures.
Very happy to share our new paper in @PNASNews on how #GriffonVultures change their movement and social behaviour with age: https://t.co/bya0wGHazv
It seems that old griffons are much like old humans: they like to stay at home, are set in their routines and are a bit antisocial.
European Rollers absolutely love nest-boxes. Brand new boxes, some deployed as late as mid April, already have a very good occupation rate!

Cientistas estão a estudar a migração dos rolieiros que nidificam em Castro Verde, no âmbito de um projeto gerido pela Estação Biológica de Mértola. A Wilder falou com a investigadora @TeresaCatry e conta-lhe as últimas novidades. 📷Francesco Veronesi https://t.co/VxEUZiesIC
Tracked migratory birds are documenting their own deaths along the African-Eurasian flyway.
Energy infrastructure, illegal killing & poisoning to blame, outstripping natural mortality causes in tracked raptors, storks & cranes. #Ornithology

Using locations of >1800 colonies and tracks from 354 individuals, we assessed wind turbine exposure for Lesser Kestrels in EU and Africa.
26% of the EU pop has at least 1 turbine around colony. Sadly, Natura2000 fails to mitigate potential impact

In our new paper, led by Juan Serratosa, 1704 deaths of 45 large, migratory bird species we tracked show that human-caused deaths are more than natural deaths. Majority of deaths are from electrocution (40.5%), illegal killing (21.7%) & poisoning (16.3%): https://t.co/JJNnWp6iUn
10 years ago we use geolocators to track the first #EuropeanRollers and discovered their wintering areas (https://t.co/IBJ5squtPl). Last year, under our @rolieiro project, we fitted some rollers with GPS tags, and last week one of them was back from its amazing journey!
European Rollers are arriving at their breeding grounds and we have just retrieved the data of a GPS-tagged bird! What an incredible journey!

Our #EuropeanRoller project was featured in @RTP2 Biosfera!

We are still installing nest-boxes for our #rollers in Alentejo, hoping these will make a difference to save the species from extinction!
