Tunisian authorities have detained human rights defender and lawyer, Ayachi Hammami, to enforce a 5-year sentence based on false accusations in a high profile ‘conspiracy case’ - a politicised investigation targeting opposition figures and human rights defenders.

Hammami is an emblematic figure of the Tunisian human rights movement, and has been representing victims of human rights violations and leading national efforts for democracy, judicial independence, and fundamental freedoms for decades. Because of his legitimate and peaceful work, he is now facing direct reprisal. After his arrest on 2 December, a video was released on his social media account expressing that he will be starting a hunger strike to express his ongoing struggle for freedoms and democracy in Tunisia.

We call on Tunisian authorities to immediately release Ayachi Hammami, drop all charges, and end the judicial harassment of human rights defenders.

Explosions, unidentified drones and communications jamming. We are witnessing these psychological operations firsthand, right now, but we will not be intimidated. One projectile was a smoke bomb, and the other hit a ship's barrier and fell into the sea without being identified. 12 drones are flying over Alma from a short distance, it could be targeted tonight. our ship, Dir Yassin, ~5 drones flying over us at a med altitude.

UPDATE: As of 30 July, most of the #FreedomFlotilla Handala crew members have now been subjected to deportation after being arbitrarily detained by Israeli authorities in international waters.

Two crew members, human rights defenders and labour activists Chris Smalls from USA and Hatem Laouini from Tunisia, are still in arbitrary Israeli detention. We join the voices calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
