post-canon lxc getting meng shi's body. his last act of solitude is taking her coffin to dongying, where her son had arranged a resting place for her. there's a house jgy already decorated nearby. a small city not far off. a whole room that gets good light filled with paper and paint and ink.

there is a brick of lxc's favorite tea in the kitchen. a painting he gave jgy years ago -- before he was jgy, back when he was meng yao. an old white robe, torn and stitched, sits in a trunk in the main room.

there are journals -- so many journals, jgy was always keeping some journal -- and there are papers whose usefulness has long past: instructions on how to breach the walls of nightless city, a manual for dressing as a jin disciple.

on their own shelf, a tidy pile of books lxc knows were stolen from the lan clan's library.

he stays for a whole week. he drinks what jgy would have. he visits the city and eats what he knows jgy would like. he paints in the well-lit room and washes a teapot in the kitchen.

but it isn't until the very last day that he allows himself a peek in one of the journals. it is an invasion and he will punish himself when he is back in gusu -- but he must know. he greedily picks up one of the books dated just after the war, when jgy would have been at his most fractured and hungry. was he a tool to him or a friend? had it been real all this time? lxc needed to know.

so he scrolled through the pages until an entry stopped his eye.

"I asked er-ge what country he'd want to visit if he ever had the time to travel. He said it was frivolous to think of because he'd never get to so he didn't have one picked out. I pressed him anyway, saying there has to be somewhere he's thought of, even a little bit. He said Dongying."
