This week, I joined colleagues from the @HakiKNCHR during public awareness forums on reparations in Kisumu and Kakamega counties.
Reparations are not acts of charity but a legal and moral obligation to address the harm suffered by victims of gross and systemic human rights violations. They are about restoring dignity, acknowledging suffering, promoting accountability and helping communities heal.
Our discussions focused on different forms reparations i.e compensation, rehabilitation, restitution, official acknowledgment of wrongdoing and guarantees that such violations will never happen again.
Nearly two decades after the 2007/2008 PEV, many victims and affected families are still carrying deep wounds. The same applies to victims affected from 2017 to 2026. The physical, psychological, social and economic scars remain a daily reality for many, underscoring the urgent need for meaningful reparations and accountability.
One moment particularly stayed with me in 2008 during documentation of PEV, I met a widow whose husband was beheaded during the violence. Today, she recounted how she was subsequently chased away by her in-laws and left to rebuild her life on her own. To this day, she has never received any form of support. Listening to her story again was heartbreaking and a stark reminder that for many victims, justice and healing remain unfinished journeys.
As a society, we must remain committed to upholding human rights and promote accountability.
The voices of victims must continue to be heard and their suffering must never be forgotten.

agree with you, @eduukoome. The return on investment is better service delivery and improved efficiency in the administration of justice.
To enhance accountability and transparency, the JSC has also undertaken to publicize the performance of Judges and Judicial Officers in the next FY.
@Ingutiah Commissioner, with the current recruitment levels judges , researchers etc Kenyans expect efficiency in the judiciary.kenyans expect clearance of backlog, fighting corruption aggressively, minimal adjournment , load weight for each judge and performance of each of them .
Congratulations to the newly appointed members of the Judiciary family.
The appointment of Researchers is a welcome step toward strengthening the administration of justice.
The necessity of these appointments is underscored by the significant caseloads in our courts. On average, a HC Judge handles approximately 1,200 cases annually, a Magistrate about 2,000 cases, while Judges in the ELC and ELRC handle approximately 500 and 450 cases respectively each year. Through diligent legal research, the researchers will play a critical role in enhancing judicial efficiency, improving the quality of judicial output, and supporting the timely delivery of decisions.
It is equally encouraging to note that many of the appointees are young lawyers with fewer than five years' post-admission experience. This not only addresses challenges within the legal job market but also contributes to the development and mentorship of the next generation of judicial officers.
I extend my best wishes to all the appointees for every success in their new roles.
The Judicial Service Commission has appointed a total of 125 Senior Legal Researchers and Legal Researchers.
These officers are central to strengthening the administration of justice in Kenya. Working directly under designated Judges and Judicial Officers, they will carry out complex legal research on precedent-setting authorities across jurisdictions within and beyond the Commonwealth, analyse pleadings and submissions, and draft bench memoranda and well-researched opinions on matters of law and fact.

@SellersCounsel this is so apt.
Money and titles can open many doors, but they can never buy back time. Being present for your child and wife especially in those precious moments after birth is a privilege and a responsibility that should never be taken for granted.
A friend at a MidLaw firm recently told me he felt he couldn’t take paternity leave without upsetting the partners. He was planning to head back to the office two days after his wife gave birth.
My exact words: “If you show up for work two days after your wife has a baby and the partners don’t immediately send you home, run as far away as you can from that firm.”
We grind in law. I just worked a lot of the weekend on a deal with zero real urgency.
But there are lines. Becoming a parent is one of them. If your firm doesn’t treat it that way, there are 10 others that will.

Do you ever wonder why, despite professional success, you still feel bored, restless, or discontented?
I found some answers after reading Ikigai by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles. The book explores the intersection of passion, skills, values and service to society. Ikigai is where purpose and fulfilment meet.
Finding your ikigai is not merely about achieving success, it is about discovering a clear sense of purpose. The concept resonates with the Luhya word obhulamu, which loosely translates to "the good life," but carries a deeper meaning of living a healthy, long, meaningful and fulfilling existence.
Last year, I developed the below sample Ikigai model for lawyers as a tool for reflection on purpose, professional growth and service.
Follow your Ikigai. If you have not yet discovered it, make that journey your next pursuit.
Congrats @Mr_Guantai!
For the past 7 years, I have been actively engaged in pursuing accountability for victims of excessive use of force by the police. I am currently representing victims in a criminal trial where some of the charges are under doctrine of command responsibility.
This remains a critical area in the advancement of human rights, accountability & the rule of law. I look forward to reading your paper. Big up once more.
@Esq_Dalmas_J, glad to learn that you have an association of Young Bar law firm owners. It is an excellent platform for sharing experiences, exploring partnerships, building networks, & embracing innovation. Big up!
I highly recommend the books by Allen Gichuhi and @GeorgeOmwansa on law firm management. They offer valuable insights on building sustainable and successful legal practices.

As we gather under the theme “Beyond Love and Intimate Spaces”, may we continue to amplify voices, inspire change and strengthen collective action towards a safer and more just society for all women and girls.
Looking forward to meaningful conversations, solidarity and impactful resolutions in beautiful Diani.

Waking up to the heartbreaking news of the deaths and injuries involving students of Utumishi Girls is deeply painful.
No parent, guardian, family member, school community or nation should ever have to endure such a tragic incident involving young lives full of promise and hope.
My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones during this difficult time. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace and perpetual light shine upon them. Speedy recovery to the injured.
This tragedy is a painful reminder that school safety is non-negotiable and must remain a priority at all times.
