Skjaldborg also fed the audience with some cinematic comedic chow: Amongst the Birds, which scooped the festival’s Audience Award (Einarinn) and had the theatre roaring with laughter.
Directed by Mika Kaurismäki, Ragnar Axelsson, and Ingvar Þórðarson,
the film follows an elderly couple in Loðmundarfjörður, Óli and Jóhanna, who have been creating nests for eider ducks for over two decades. Yet, it’s the winsome warmth of the film’s two central septuagenarians, Óli and his friend Albert, who turn the film into a makeshift buddy comedy through their Statler-and-Waldorf-esque joke-cracking and faux cynicism.
From full set-up to full take-down, we are but avid witnesses to this grand seasonal operation, painstakingly crafted out of love and devotion to the birds, now numbering approximately 12,000 each season. Both Óli and Albert joke they have no idea how to make coffee themselves—therefore, they always have to wait for Jóhanna to make her expertly strong brew.
Of course, it’s hard to deny the onscreen impact of the ducks themselves, who waddle adorably across the frame. With many of them putting up with the eager petting from their human caretakers’ young relatives, the birds are the flick’s other scene-stealers as we watch them settle in for a short snooze or a quick snack.
