#BenjaminRee's third feature is almost certain to earn a nomination for Best Documentary at next year’s Oscars. It tells the moving story of Mats Steen, a young Norwegian man who passed away at 25 from a degenerative muscular disease. Mats’ parents believed he had led a lonely, isolated existence—until messages began arriving from his online friends around the globe. Through virtual reality and online gaming, particularly World of Warcraft, Mats had forged genuine friendships, found a sense of community, and even experienced romance.
This is one of those documentaries that prompts deep self-reflection about the privileges we often take for granted. Watching it, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt for how fortunate my life is compared to so many others. While the film doesn’t delve into philosophical debates about the nature of reality or ethical dilemmas, it offers a refreshingly positive perspective on gaming. It explores the concept of “real” connections in a deeply humanistic and unconventional way, making it a touching tribute to a life cut short.
That said, the “touch grass” crowd are gonna hate this one. Their loss.

With the release of THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF IBELIN on @netflix, #WorldOfWarcraft players are gathering at Mats Steen’s grave online, where he was known as Ibelin, leaving flowers and lighting candles in his honor. Each candle is lit by a player, and they only last for 15 minutes at a time with more coming to ensure the tribute continues. Each player must travel to a specific location to purchase the candles and they cannot be shared with other players.

In a recent interview, Robert and Trude Steen (Mats' parents) said the following:

Mats often talked about wanting to be remembered. “That’s natural,” says Robert, “When you know you will die young. Isn’t it? One of the biggest fears is that you won’t be remembered. Nobody will notice.” Trude nods: “He wanted to make a difference to other people. He said that a lot.”
