When did comics begin? Story of Mr. Jabot, created by Swiss schoolmaster Rudolphe Töpffer (1799 - 1846) is often cited as the first comic strip and could be considered a point of origin. However, how true this really is depends on your definition of what a comic is.

Hugo Hercules was a comic strip in the Chicago Tribune, starting in 1902 publishing 17 strips over 5 months. Created by William H.D Koerner, it is widely considered the first superhero fiction comic.
