🏃♀️ The Amazing Race - Round 2 🏁
This time, our Cape Town team took on the Amazing Race at the V&A Waterfront.
Split into teams, they worked their way through a series of challenges, from drumming and team performances to painting, puzzles, and a competitive down-down along the way.
There was plenty of friendly competition, a good few laughs, some quick thinking and a healthy dose of team spirit.
A fun morning together and another chance to strengthen the connections that make our team what it is.😎

🔎What’s the Biggest Challenge Facing South Africa’s Actuarial Teams?💡
We asked 469 actuaries at the 2026 @ActuarialSa Convention this very question, and the results were revealing!
🤖 AI topped the list, with 38% of responses.
But beyond AI, actuaries also highlighted challenges around talent, workload and wellbeing, data quality, and the profession’s continued relevance.
Interestingly, among those who identified AI as a challenge, 37% pointed specifically to adoption and integration into everyday work.
The findings suggest that the conversation is shifting from whether AI has a place in the profession to how we use it effectively, responsibly and without losing the human judgement that makes actuarial expertise so valuable.

🌍 Looking Back at BIG Ideas 2026! 💡
A few highlights from three fantastic days at @ifhp1 BIG Ideas 2026: The Cost Containment Edition in Cape Town!
From thought-provoking presentations to lively discussions and valuable connections, the event brought together healthcare leaders from across Africa and around the world to tackle one of the industry's biggest challenges: how do we contain healthcare costs without compromising outcomes?
Dr Tebogo Phaleng opened the programme, while Barry Childs and Dr Liezél van Deventer also took to the stage to explore the question: Food is Medicine?
BIG Ideas once again created an energetic space to share different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and advance important healthcare conversations.
As Strategic Partner to iFHP, we value the opportunity to contribute to these discussions and look forward to the next event.

🏁 Taking on the Amazing Race 🏁
Yesterday our Joburg team swapped the usual workday for something a little more adventurous, taking on the Maboneng Amazing Race and a series of team challenges along the way.
From Giant Jenga and an art challenge to a taste test, a Shakira challenge (because those hips don’t lie 💃) and even a soft drink challenge, the afternoon brought plenty of laughs, some questionable tactics, and more than a little friendly rivalry.
Congratulations to the winning team; Tinashe Tafirei, Kenneth Seleka, Zaid Saeed, Agnes Matlhadisha, Shannon Philips and Karishma Magan, who came out on top and showed the rest of us how it’s done! 🏆
Not the worst way to spend a Thursday.

📚 Why Reading Still Matters for Actuaries
Yesterday at the @ActuarialSa Convention, our Head of Life Solutions, Pamela Hellig, took to the stage to explore why reading remains such an important skill for actuaries in an increasingly fast-moving, digital world.
In her session, Pam explored the role reading plays in strengthening analytical thinking, concentration, empathy, creativity, and our ability to engage more deeply with complex ideas.
It was a timely reminder that, even as the way we consume information continues to change, some skills remain fundamental to how we think, learn and make better decisions.
A great session and an important conversation for the profession. 👏

🩺 2027 Medical Scheme Increases: What Stands Out?
South Africa’s seven largest open medical schemes have announced their 2027 contribution increases, ranging from 7.35% to 8.9%, with an average increase of around 8%.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Across the 2027 launches, we’re seeing a stronger focus on affordability and value, with lower increases on many entry-level and network options, alongside new options aimed at younger members, families and those looking to manage costs.
There’s also a growing emphasis on prevention and proactive healthcare, with schemes expanding wellness rewards, mental health and chronic care support, while introducing better digital tools to help members access and manage their benefits.
At the same time, medical inflation continues to run well ahead of everyday inflation, driven by factors including provider costs, greater healthcare utilisation, ageing membership and more chronic illness.
The takeaway? Don’t look at the contribution increase alone. With benefit structures, networks and co-payments also changing, it’s important to understand what your medical scheme option will actually offer you in 2027.
